screen has froze and wont switch off
My ipad has froze and cant turn it off

What is showing on the iPad's screen, connect to iTunes, disabled, or a 'normal' screen ?
Have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear and it will hopefully reboot - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. If that works then have another go at shutting it down
