I always thought that in Disk Utility the first item in the sidebar was the hard drive and it showed the manufacturer and size of the drive, like this screenshot of mine;
It was my understanding that the name of the hard drive could not be changed. The indented line, or volume name, can be changed easy enough, but not the hard drive name.
Lately, I've been seeing many that look like this;
Now I'm confused. Can someone tell me how the hard drive name got changed?
That appears to be what Disk Utility in the later releases is doing.
You can use Applicaitons -> Utilities -> System Information -> SATA/SATA Express to see what the physical device information.

I have access to an iMac that was purchased March 2014, and a Mac mini that was purchased Nov 2014, so I checked them to see if they jived with what you said. The iMac had the manufacturer description and the Mac mini just had "Macintosh HD". I don't think I would have figured that out.

The change came in Mavericks. I have access to 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion), 10.8 (Mountain Lion), and 10.9 (Mavericks). I just check all 4 platforms, and Only Mavericks Disk Utility used the volume name as the device name.
Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion Disk Utility showed the older style make and model information.
That's interesting because when I checked the two newer Macs I also checked an older iMac, probably 3+ years old, and it was running Mavericks and showed the manufacturer's name and size. Maybe the difference is it came shipped with a prior OS version and was upgraded to Mavericks.
