Problems using external DVD drive with MacBook Air, Yosemite update

I have a 13 inch MacBook Air from 2013. I recently updated the operating software to Yosemite 10.10.5 and it looks like my external DVD drive is no longer working with my computer. The drive wakes up when I plug the USB cable into the computer, but the computer is not recognizing it at all. Do I need to install a DVD driver? I'm not really sure how to proceed. Thank you!
