By purchasing a retina MBP with 16 GB RAM. The RAM modules are soldered to the logic board in a retina MBP and cannot be altered after production.

Any retina MBP that comes with 8 GB RAM requires a special order if you want 16 GB RAM. The current 15" models all have 16 GB RAM installed, the 13" models come standard with 8 GB RAM but can be upgraded to 16 GB RAM.
