iPad asking for password after upgrading to iOS 9

I upgraded an older iPad (iPad 2) to iOS 9 last night. When I woke up and tried to open it this morning it asked for a password (not passcode) in order to access the iPad. I have never had a password on the iPad before and so have no idea how to access the content.

I have no important info on the iPad itself and so I could do a factory reset. However, iTunes says that it won't let me because of a password has been set on the iPad. :-/ any ideas how I might remedy this?

Hi! Try the DFU mode, this may help:

  • Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 3 seconds
  • Press the Home button while holding the Power button and hold both for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button, but KEEP HOLDING the Home button.
  • After about 15 seconds, iTunes will tell you it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.
  • Restore your device
