Hi! To resolve this issue, try using the DFU mode. Note this will erase all the data from your device.

    • Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
    • Turn off the device.
    • Press and hold the Power button for 3 seconds
    • Press the Home button while holding the Power button and hold both for 10 seconds.
    • Release the Power button, but KEEP HOLDING the Home button.
    • After about 15 seconds, iTunes will tell you it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.
    • Restore your device

Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support

    Errors: 1, 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 53, 56, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.

Your device or computer might have a hardware issue that stops the update or restore from completing.

    1. Check that your security software and settings aren't blocking your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
    2. Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
    3. Make sure that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
    4. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

If you still see the error message, check for outdated or modified software.

I don't think anybody understands but i really really need help. My phone is stuck in recovery mode. I can not click on a restore button. When i click restore in iTunes it tells me i HAVE to update and restore but this is impossible because the update crashes everything. I have turned off all firewalls and redownloaded it to iTunes. Still wont work. The day ios9 came out i downloaded it on my phone and it said downloaded but i could not install it so i tried to update my phone via iTunes now my phone is stuck on the screen that says plug into iTunes. This phone has never been jail broken or anything at all and it seems im the only one with this problem. somebody please help. Ask people you know for help. PLEASE

The poster before this understood you had a problem and provided you with the means to correct it. Error 53 is a hardware problem. If you follow the steps he provided you and you perform steps 1-3 and it does not correct the issue, then step 4 is to contact Apple Support. This is not Apple Support, this is a user to user support forum. You have been provided as much as can be provided here, you need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service provider to have the hardware examined.

Hardware fails. It's a fact of life. Make an appointment at the genius bar of your local Apple Store and have it checked.

Because hardware can fail! Things happen, and that is why manufacturers have a warranty to cover things when the fail under the warranty period. After that, the user is required to pay for repairs. Just because it is stock, does not mean it cannot fail.
