Q: What to tell cashier asking for verification code? (CCV, CVV)

Anybody had any luck giving a 3-digit number to the cashier when they ask for the credit card verification number?

    If you are using Apple Pay, there are no circumstances under which it is relevant for that information to be requested.

    I agree with Jonathan, the cashier should not be asking for the verification code.  You will most likely need to provide it for on-line transactions only, but not in store transactions.

    They can ask for the last 4 (5 for AMEX) digits of the CC number.  When using Apple Pay, you need to give them the last 4 (5 for AMEX) digits of the Device Account Number.

    The DAN has a 3 digit verification code ? Where is it ? It wouldn't be the 3 digit on the physical card, right ?

    what would you give them ?

    Apple Pay can be used to make payments in retail stores or within apps. When paying via Apple Pay:

    - There is no three digit card verification number / code to give (the account number that is being used to process the payment is not your credit or debit card number);

    - There are no circumstances (either in store or within apps) under which it would be necessary for the user to provide a cashier with a verification number in order to authorise or verify a payment.

    If you are returning an item for a refund, a retailer may ask you to confirm the last four or five digits of the Device Account Number in order to locate your original purchase and process the return.

    Any issues that may be encountered when using Apple Pay can be reported to Apple here:

    I've reported it to Apple.  Whether they do anything about it or not, who knows.  I'll try again in a few months to see if this retailer has gotten it figured out, yet.  Thanks.
