Repairing Bootcamp after creating a new partition

I made the similar mistake than in the similarly titled thread :Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition

I created a new partition using disk utilities, rendering my bootcamp unbootable. I see Bootcamp in the boot menu in OS X. But when I try to reboot it fails.

Following guidelines from previous threads, here are my infos: (Build: OS X 10.8.5 (12F2560))

Please start a new thread and post a reference here and the output of the following commands.

1. diskutil list

I'm vaguely familiar with the process considering the posts I read but not confident and skilled enough to do it by myself.

Could someone help me please ?

The gap between GPT3 and GPT4 indicates a lost NTFS header. Can you use Bootcamp fails after Yosemite upgrade (Plz help me Loner!) as a reference and download Testdisk and GPT Fdisk? Once you have Testdisk downloaded, run it and use /dev/rdisk0 and execute a Quick Search.

Please also post the out of the following command (notice that it is different from what you posted earlier).

sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk04 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Thank you for your quick reply. (I have a problem with some characters/words that are not possible to write here apparently)

the command with 04 doesn't return anything

I downloaded Testdisk and GPT

This looks correct, but you will lose about 260+ GB in the gap between Recovery HD and Bootcamp. There is a way to get it back, but let us tackle this first.

User uploaded file

In the first set of Gdisk steps in the linked discussion, the value in step 7 is

732149760

and the size in Step 8 is

732997632

Use these and rebuild your GPT (first set of Gdisk steps) and the MBR (second set of Gdisk steps) and test Windows boot first.

It indeed worked as expected. My bootcamp boot normally. thank you ! You pretty much saved a year worth of work.

As for the 260 GB. There was nothing on it. I was trying to partition to potentially add an Ubuntu, but didn't do anything when I saw that I could not boot on windows anymore. There should be no loss in itself. The only question is, if it's possible to reaccess this space (for OS X, or ot install Ubuntu)

Thank you so much again !

Oct 1, 2015 8:42 AM in response to Anthistle

You will temporarily lose access to Recovery HD and will need to re-install OSX to get it back.

1. Backup OSX and Windows.

2. Merge OSX and Recovery HD. The order of the disk slices is critical.

diskutil mergePartitions jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" disk0s2 disk0s3

3. Run Disk Utility and drag the bottom right corner as far as it will go and touch the BC/Windows partition.

4. Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) and re-install OSX - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support . This will rebuild Recovery HD.

Please be aware of the following

Which version of OS X is installed by OS X Recovery?

  • If you use the Recovery System stored on your startup drive to reinstall OS X, it installs the most recent version of OS X previously installed on this computer.
  • If you use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X, it installs the version of OS X that originally came with your computer. After installation is finished, use the Mac App Store to install related updates or later versions of OS X that you have previously purchased.

5. You can recreate the MBR using the same Gdisk steps, if necessary.
