9,183 unread messages on iPhone 6 after IOS update

and they won't go away! Tried "Mark all as read" and deleted/reinstalled accounts and they are STILL listing over 9k unread messages!!!! HELP!

it's maddening and I just simply can't have my mail icon have the red bubble with 9k unread messages in it...
