Q: New but slow iMac

About a month ago, I replaced my late 2009 27" iMac with a late 2013 27" model, I expected an improvement, but the new computer is sometimes very slow with E-mail or with opening videos, etc. It's better with nothing, as far as I can tell. Anyway, it occurs to me that there might be some essential apps that I am missing. My old computer had too many, but I have only transferred a very few of them at this time.

Are there some essential apps that could make the difference? Could it be that my computer will run faster as soon as I download one of them?

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and  help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

First uninstall Avira according to the cevelopers instructions.  It's not needed and AV software is know to cause performance issues.

Also reboot to clear out temporary cache and swap files.  I'm an advocate of rebooting daily.

Uninstall Avira. It is a worthless scam on the Mac. All it does is use computer resources to cause problems.

You really should look at the items you are starting at login. I doubt that you will be using them all the time. Having them running when not being used can slow you Mac down.

I'm surprised that neither of you said anything about security, the one red note. I had left the door open by accident. I normally have it set at "Mac App store and identified developers." Anyway, I restarted my computer and reduced the number of apps opening at start up. I'll check on the effect of Avira later.

Use Avira's uninstaller. It will be in your Mac's Utilities folder, unless you moved or deleted it.

Like most ill-conceived garbage Avira's installer is not completely effective. The following will require manual removal:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Avira

    /Library/Application Support/Avira

    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.avira.uninstall.savedState

    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.avira.controlcenter.savedState

    /var/log/com.avira.helper.watchdox.log

    I replaced my late 2009 27" iMac with a late 2013 27" model,

How did you obtain that Mac? Is it refurbished model that you purchased directly from Apple a month ago, not through a private seller, eBay, etc. or any other vendor?

You noticed that it isn't a 2015 model. That caught me by surprise, too. I thought it was until I had to look in "About this Mac" for some reason.I don't quite understand how or why it happened, but I got the 2013  set from the Apple store. That's all I can say, except that they were unable to fix my older set. An independent repair shop had told me that it couldn't be fixed, but I went to Apple for one last try. That turned out to be a good move. It's still a mystery to me, one that I don't choose to explore.

I'm confused because the only 27 inch models Apple sells now are considered late 2014 or mid 2015 models. The "About This Mac" information window has been known to show inaccurate information. If that is the case it may be rectified in the future with an OS X update, or by applying the OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Combo Update.

No matter though, as long as it's either new or refurbished from Apple, and you purchased it through the online or retail Apple Store, you are eligible for Apple's complimentary 90 day telephone or chat support. You can always avail yourself of that. Be sure to contact Apple using the Contact Us link below.

Either way you should get rid of Avira. The instructions I posted above will accomplish that. Never use any so-called "cleaners" or "zappers" to uninstall software.

I don't think you're right. I'm not going to bother checking now, but it seems to me that on previous shopping tours, I found that Apple was selling models from many years, so if they could do it Online, they could do it in their stores. As to the telephone support, I may be wrong, but the last time I talked to apple, I think that she said that I had the regular three-year membership, starting in August of 2015.This would be the second three-year Apple Care Protection Plan for me. In any event, I am one counted fellow.

I got the following from you this morning.

    "

To definitively identity your model, choose System Report from the About This Macwindow.

The Model Identifier appearing under Hardware Overview is truth. Everything else is rumor."

I don't know why that doesn't appear here, but I'm glad I looked again, because I found some things that I hadn't noticed before, things that were very helpful, very enlightening, including the MANUAL. I'm now going through them one-by-one, and I've already learned useful things. By the way, I meant to say CONTENTED, not counted.
