For AirDrop, will any WiFi network suffice?

Let's say I'm at a hotel and I want to AirDrop something to a friend's iPhone, which is connected to the same neywork.

iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.2

Yes but you must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
