High CPU usage

I have noticed that when I check with iStatPro my CPU usage is always high and most often there is only 1% idle, sometimes a little more. Now, my iMac is aging, Late 2009, so I am not expecting very high percentage of idleness, but one or just a few percent? When I check Activity Monitor, it seems like it is launchd, ReportCrash, UserEventAgent and fseventsd who are mostly running up in double digits and sometimes WindowServer joins the party.

I am not expert but I have at least tried to start up in Safe Mode, repairing permissions (it seemed to go down a more normal level as long as I stayed in Safe Mode) and then I reset the SMC and PRAM, but after that it was back to the usual.

Anyone has any ideas and suggestions?

Well I know I wrote that I am not an expert, but I know that when you use the computer, it will affect the computer to put it simply.

I should of course have explained that those processes are always there, no matter whether I use apps or not. I normally have three programmes open at any time; Mail, Safari and FaceTime (since I can receive and make phone calls) But why would ReportCrash be on top when I only write this, for instance? Of course, Mail is set to fetch new mail automatically, but still. I also run DropBox, Google Drive and flickr. After I did what I explained, it seems like it has imporved a little bit, since it sometimes drops to 12-15 % Idle. I just wonder what kind of processes may cause such as launhcd and ReportCrash to be active all the time? Is that normal?

Then I hope you will regard me as a person with a little knowledge about computers, at least. When I wrote that I am not an expert I didn't mean to say that I don't understand anything about them at all and am just fumbling in the dark and cry for help most of the time. I am trying not to be sarcastic, but when you receive sucn a response it feels more like an insult than an attempt to help. Apps can affect Mac performance... Oh, really? How surprising.

No, because it deals with notebooks first of all and when it comes to Safari, I don't have any problem with Safari. I just want to know what CrashReport etc. are and why they are active all the time? Is there a way I can find that out instead of being led on to many hoops and loops doing something which most probably do not have much to do with it?

And I mention that I use Activity Monitor btw.

I'd say something odd is going on with your machine.

To do:

-- run etrecheck. post output here.

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

-- look in the console logs

/macintosh hd/Applications/Utilities/Console

it deals with notebooks first of all

Talking about notebooks doesn't make any difference. It's all the same for anything running X.

OK, so here is the report from EtreCheck:

Problem description:

High CPU usage - Nice 0% and mostly between 1 and 15 % idle without working with anything specific. Safari, Mail and FaceTime open and DropBox, Google Drive, flickr and Evernote…

50% ReportCrash

It would appear there is a process that is starting, crashing, starting, crashing, starting, crashing, wash, rinse, repeat. This is what is keeping ReportCrash busy.

You should use the above listed crash reports to identify the process.

Also look at Applications -> Utilities -> Console to identify repeated log entries that might identify the process.

Besides that, you have a ton of 3rd party stuff installed on your Mac. You might want to do some house cleaning on things you are no longer using and use the vendors uninstall instructions.

Yes, I know and it is stuff which accumulates over time. From time to time I do clean up but I have so much else to do than to work on the machine:) Anyway, I launched Console and there is one repeated message which concerns launchd. This is what it says:

30.09.15 01.16.35,501 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.pratikkumar.airserver[83281]) Service setup event to handle failure and will not launch until it fires.

But what this pratikkumar.airserver is, I don't know. I tried to Google it to see if it found anything, but nothing.

Yes, it might have been but I have never installed anything like pratikkumar.

Anyway, I think you put me on the right track. I found the AirServer folder but it had a minus-sign to it so I opened info on it and changed access to read and write. Then I also deleted a couple of other plists for services I no longer use and lo and behold: CPU is now down to 90-80 % idle. Feels good. I will see if I can get some spare time to do some cleaning. There are lots of apps I have just tried out and then forgotten and although I try to delete such from time to time, I never get to the bottom of it...

But thank you very much, indeed! Problem solves, case closed:)

Have a nice day or night.

Yes, I think it is because it is no longer free. Anyway, I deleted it and although there may be more culprits, it seems like that AirServer was the culprit. It is some streaming solution between iOS Devices and your Mac. I haven't got the slightest idea when I have installed that and I guess I must have been bored:) Anyway, I didn't have access to its folder in Application Support and when I enabled read and write, the CPU-usage shrank to more normal levels. And I deleted the entire thing as I can't see I have any use for it.
Thanks for continuing to have a look at it though...

No, versions prior to 2.8 will continue to work for the foreseeable future and are still free to use, just no longer formally supported. They may break some day in the future either due to an OS X change or if Cisco/ClamAV® changes the format for their signatures, but there's no indication of that.
