Q: Upgrade iMac 10,1 directly to Yosemite?

Would like to update my motherʻs iMac which has the following specs:

OSX 10.6.8

Processor: 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

iMac 10,1

My reading of Appleʻs guidelines for Yosemite (https://www.apple.com/support/osx/upgrade/) indicates a direct upgrade from OSX 10.6.8 to Yosemite is possible but I wondered if that was wise. She doesn't need or use the iCloud at all and has only the basic apps on it, plus iPhoto collections; she just wants to continue using the same iMac safely for at least a couple more years. Consequently, I wondered if it would be better for this older iMac to upgrade it only to Mountain Lion. All seems to be running well on it apart from the warnings about discontinued support for OS 10.6, etc. For this reason we switched her browser from Safari to Firefox. Of course, we'll do a full TM backup before proceeding with any upgrade.

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

but I wondered if that was wise.

You should have no problem going from 10.6 to 10.10 or if you wait until tomorrow, you should be able to download 10.11 if the advertised release date is met.

If Apple continues its past practice, once 10.11 is released, Mountain Lion will no longer receive updates.

One thing she may find very different is the scrolling direction has changed, but this can be reverted to the 10.6 direction by going to System Preferences/Mouse or Trackpad and unchecking Use natural scrolling.

I would also make sure she has at least 4 GB of RAM and more is better.

Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
