Is there a way to schedule iOS and app updates? I live in a remote area with satellite broadband with a data download limit. However downloads between midnight and 6am don't count towards my allowance. Thanks.

I have to agree. Right now there are two options:

- Automatic updates with no control over when they are applied (except by disabling wifi which creates its own issues)

- Manual updates

Automatic updates are problematic because they can happen at the most inconvenient time. Case in point I use google hangouts app for work.

Right when I was about to start a google hangout, apple decided now's the perfect time to update. Meanwhile I'm making all my colleagues wait for hangouts to finish upgrading.... GRRRR.

At the bare minimum there should be a way to stop an in progress update. But ideally I should be able to schedule these for 2AM when I'm sleeping - not in the middle of the day when I'm trying to use my phone and apps.

Manually updating isn't terribly convenient either. I swear if I go more than a day or two there are 20 app updates. I have better things to do with my time than constantly open the app store and manually update all 20.

There needs to be a middle ground. Automatic updates but in a time frame that's convenient for me! Or perhaps automatic updates where you prompt the user. Would you like to automatically update now? So if I'm in the middle of doing something I can at least say NO not now.

So you're right, of course, that if wi-fi is turned off, the new OS (or whatever) won't download. But the bad news with iOS 9 and 9.0.1 is that apple pushed them down during my work day, when I needed to have my wifi turned on. So, if I want to use my device(s), I'm at risk of Apple spending 1 GB (or more) of my 15 GB monthly data limit every time they decide to send a new iOS. Back to the OP's original question: is there any way to tell Apple that we want to be in charge of when a new OS is pushed to us? Disabling the device doesn't accomplish that. Thanks.
