Q: My iPhone 6s home button is really hot and the device won't turn on

i have had my phone since Friday, and this morning when I woke up the home button was burning hot and the screen is just black. I went to bed with it working just fine last night, plugged it in to charge, and now it won't work. Nothing else is hot, not even the charging port, just the home button is on fire. I have had the phone unplugged for an hour and the button is still on fire.  I had just made the choice to switch from a Samsung to this iPhone and need to say it makes me slightly regret my choice because I have always known that apple products have tons of issues. I an not happy that I have had this phone for less than 5 days and this is happening. Anyways, is there anything i can do to fix it without having to go into the apple storeI did not finish setting up my iCloud, so to lose all of information because of a defective phone will not make me happy.

I Also have a paired Apple Watch running with software 2.0. My phone is a 64 GB 6s which is a replacement phone since I was having so much trouble with the first.  When mine was hot and had a dark screen, my Apple Watch said that it was disconnected from my phone.  That is what actually prompted me to check on my phone since I knew that it was fully charged.

I contacted apple support yesterday about the sudden shutdown & hot home button issues.  After many useless suggestions by lower some low-level tech who was obviously following a script, I was directed to and spoke with a senior advisor.  This advisor directed me to do a factory reset followed by a restore from my backup.  Her logic behind a factory reset was that previous updates may not work as well wirelessly because the data can "sometimes become corrupt" when done over the air.  Geeze - can't tell if she was just completely inept or also following a script.  I tried arguing my case but ended up with no choice but to waste my time and oblige her request.  So fast forward to today and the problem happens again while using a simple weather app.  This time again, however, the home button was not hot right away, and I ended up resetting before waiting to see.

The first tech claimed that apple reads all the forum posts, but both claimed there were no other reports of the issue and that apple is not even aware of the reports on the many tech sites!  So Apple, if you're reading this, you're meaning to tell me no one there cares about release-date problems with your flagship product?

I don't have time to waste getting the run-a-round doing all the leg work for apple's inept support, and I don't have time to keep returning devices (again) that may have the same problem.  I'm going to be contacting tech sites that have highlighted this previously and see if they can bring apple to admit to the problem.  I suggest everyone else do the same.

Have had the same issue, went to bed one night only to wake up with a Hot Touch Sensor and blank screen.  Had to do a soft reset with Home +Touch ID.

Not very reliable for setting alarms to wake up to.

Issue has plagued me twice, causing me to setup a backup alarm on a non-apple product.

Hope they fix this in a new IOS release if Software related.

for ANYONE on this thread, why don't you just update to the latest PUBLIC beta.. essentially everyone on this and other forums has noted since .9.1b4, that solves this problem whatever it is.

From what I see, the beta5 is not fixing the issue (comments in link).  http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-6s-other-ios-devices-not-waking-up-co nfirmed.1922995/page-30

Besides, I suspect many of us don't want the hassle/risk of running betas, which can come with its own issues.

    64GB iPhone 6S Plus

    Setup as new phone

    Running iOS 9.0.2

I had the locked screen, warm home button issue mid-day yesterday while trying to wake up the unplugged phone. As others have stated, I was able to clear the issue with a hard reset. Afterwards I called Apple Support. After arguing with a low-level support person who wanted me to wipe the phone, I was transferred to the Safety department due to the hot home button. After interviewing me in detail about the circumstances under which it happened, that person told me the issue is being tracked and a software fix is in the works. She couldn't provide a timeline, but I'm guessing we'll see the fix in 9.1.

Same problem here, 16gb 6s, black screen, really hot home button, discovered when i got an incoming call. phone was ringing (vibe + sound), but screen was black. phone was not plugged in, approx. 25% battery. read this forum and solved by pressing (hot) home button and power for 10 seconds.

Yeah this is definitely a defect of some kind, 9.0.1 update, burning hot button, top of the line 128gb space gray, only apple to apple software and hardware. was sitting in my glovebox at 40% charge and maybe 10 windows in the background, medium reception. I expect apple to fix this garbage asap otherwise I won't be planning on wasting 1300$ for their next phone, should have stuck with nokia. Massive disappointment!

Either I've had unfortunate luck today, or this problem is quickly getting worse.  As of this morning, the freeze/shutdown has happened at least 5-6 times.  I've made no software changes before then, so I have my doubts that an iOS update will fix this.

Same issue here today for the first time. iPhone 6S+ 64GB space gray with iOs 9.0.2. Phone was unused over night and as I woke up the problems as explained occurred. Phone was not plugged in and the Home Button was overheated. The hard reset worked. Still not sure if I should return it or wait for an update.

This just happened to me.  A reset fixed it. This is discouraging as I need a working phone 24/7 as I am a physician who takes call.  Posting with the hope that Apple sees this and issues a fix.   I will be using my old 5S as my alarm from now on.  I have an iPhone 6S 64gb Space Gray with a TSMC chip.

Same thing happened for me:  Screen black, hot home button.  Siri still works, so it's not like the phone is off.   As reported, doing a hard reset takes you back to normal operation.   Can we get an official Apple response to this issue please?

Im having this issue too, screen dead but burning hot home button, wouldn't turn on for about 35 mins but continued to burn away.

it physically stung to touch. Has only done it about a week and a bit back. Spoke to Apple the day it happened, they claimed it was the first they had heard of it and to go back to store. With all the complaints I've read now, I find it tough to believe it's the first they have heard of it!

    Now it's just generally overheating.

on charge tonight for example I picked up the phone and it was super hot on the back.

We have a heat gun so I checked the temp 44.1c (111F) that's not right at all. VERY uncomfortable to hold.

My hand still hurts 20 mins on from holding it :-/

    This phones going back!

    Thanks botsmack for the info.

Everyone, simply complaining on the community will not help at all. And it is hard for Apple to go through all the posts to extract useful information. After we put our post here, if we all can provide some feedback information to Apple(http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html), please do so. Helping Apple collect the feedback information, and they should be able to tell the problem at some point. I am sure they will do some data mining after a lot of information are collected.

My suggestion to everybody is to provide the following information, the reasons are that they are all running at the background whether your iPhone is sleep or not. And if this happened to you like 10 days ago, and you couldn't remember anything, please do so the next time it happens(hopefully there will not be a next time).

    1. Briefly described what, when, where, how(if possible) it was happened.
    2. Background App Refresh: on or off, what are the apps. (this could be helpful to determine if the background app refresh is causing the problem)
    3. Last time backup to iCloud (was it because of the backup?)
    4. Running apps after reset (iPhone will restore the apps to their status before the crash, this might be helpful)
    5. Alarm (could be the trigger?)
    6. Do not disturb
    7. Bluetooth: on or off
    8. Location services ( list the apps that has recently used your location (solid purple arrow) or used your location within the last 24 hours (solid grey arrow)
    9. Air drop status
    10. List of apps that may sync their data in the background

That's all I can think of based on how I use my iPhone. You can add more information if you like because everybody uses the iPhone differently.

Then let's just hope this issue will be solved very soon.

I agree that Apple possibly isn't scraping these forums looking for issues. I opened a case online reporting the symptoms but so far I have decided not to replace the phone itself as at least for me, switching up to 9.1B4 has "resolved" the problem in that it hasn't returned in at least a couple of weeks. I don't know if that's statistically significant but no other changes have been made, I haven't changed any alarms, background app settings, bluetooth etc. I did not do a wipe and restore either, I just updated. So my feeling is this is largely software and if the TouchID is getting hot, that suggests to me (along with reported battery drains) that it's in some kind of software driven loop running for much longer than designed. Maybe something triggers the "there's a finger" code and it's a false alarm but an edge case where it doesn't give up. This might explain why laying face down on a desk, or being in your pocket are relevant when something comes into "contact" with the sensor.

I haven't seen anybody comment on whether they swapped out their phone and that resolved it for them. Honestly if it were pure hardware I would expect it to fail pretty much all the time.

    My 2c.
