Q: My iPhone 6s home button is really hot and the device won't turn on

i have had my phone since Friday, and this morning when I woke up the home button was burning hot and the screen is just black. I went to bed with it working just fine last night, plugged it in to charge, and now it won't work. Nothing else is hot, not even the charging port, just the home button is on fire. I have had the phone unplugged for an hour and the button is still on fire.  I had just made the choice to switch from a Samsung to this iPhone and need to say it makes me slightly regret my choice because I have always known that apple products have tons of issues. I an not happy that I have had this phone for less than 5 days and this is happening. Anyways, is there anything i can do to fix it without having to go into the apple storeI did not finish setting up my iCloud, so to lose all of information because of a defective phone will not make me happy.

    At 8:20am this morning my iphone 6s went black and the home button got so hot it burnt my thumb.  No buttons would work and the only hot area was the home button.  It had not been plugged in for 5 hours and had more than 60% battery power.  My 9 month old daughter is constantly trying to get to my phone.  When I saw the screen go black she was in my arms trying to reach the phone.  If she had picked it up before I did when the screen went black and burnt her hand I would be tremendously upset. This problem needs to be fixed or I need a new phone that I can trust will not burn my baby like it did my thumb.  It is 9:20 when I am writing this and the phone is still hot and has a black screen.

    I called Verizon last night and reported this issue.  They suggested having a replacement issued through Apple because it would be faster.  I then called Apple and explained what had happened to my phone.  I had it only two days when I had the overheating home button problem.  Apple claims to be unaware of the problem but I shared this forum with their safety department and they seemed truly alarmed.  The Specialist I spoke to immediately issued me a new replacement phone.  No questions asked.  It could have been one time fluke, or this could be the start of a major issue.  I'm not taking chances and I shouldn't have to on a high price phone that's 2 days old.  Better safe than sorry.  Just my two cents.  Thank you cchandl for your advice.

    But thus far nobody is reporting the hot home button with 9.1. This is very good news.

     

    If you are reporting new episode- plesae report what OS you are running. This is very important.

    Same issue here. iPhone 6s 64GB rose gold that's 7 days old on iOS 9.0.2. The phone was on my nightstand facing up overnight, not plugged in, with close to 100% battery. When I woke up it wouldn't turn on. After a couple minutes of pressing and holding down the buttons, the home button felt like it shocked my thumb so I yelled "ow!" then pulled my hand away. Then the home button started to get hot. I found this forum and held down the home and power button for 10 seconds. The Apple logo appeared and it started up. The home button cooled down after that. I contacted AppleCare and the diagnostics showed nothing wrong. They had me speak to the safety department and documented everything. They're going to have me take it into the store so someone can look at it.

    Before wastung any of your time why not just upgrade to the official 9.1 release that fixes this?

    I upgraded to 9.1 shortly after my hot home button issue on Thursday, and the issue has not happened since.  But then again my phone is 6 days old.  Can anyone with utmost certainty confirm 9.1 fixes this?  I think it is too early to make that determination considering the problem happens so randomly and is not likely affecting the majority of iPhone users.

    There other thread have iPhone 6s user with iOS 9.1 encounter the same issues.

    Actually, AppleCare phone support referred me to the retail store and they have replaced it. My home button actually shocked me in addition to it getting hot.

     

    They didn't have an official Genius appointments open, so the phone rep told me he would call me back after calling the retail store when they opened (I called in the morning before they opened). He called me back after making sure I would be allowed to come as a walk in. He said the stores were now aware of this issue and when I went into the store, the guy at the Genius check in said they heard of this issue but I was the first case at their store to come in. It was about an hour wait for a walk-in, but they had a text message system so I went and worked at the coffee shop next door until they texted me to come back and check in.

     

    The entire process took about 5 hours since we had to wait for the retail store to open, but since it's Sunday and I didn't have any real plans today I'm glad I ended up with a new phone instead of waiting around and not knowing if my phone would fail on me since I use it 24/7 for both personal and work.

     

    Edit: I should note that I also have AppleCare coverage on the phone. I always purchase it with my devices.

    Same issue with my iPhone 6s -- it was unplugged at 100% battery when I went to bed and blacked out with the home button REALLY hot the next morning. I had to hold down the home button and lock button for a good 15-20 seconds before the Apple icon start-up screen popped up. My battery level remaining has dropped to 78%. I actually never installed iOS 9.1, so I'm not sure if this hot button issue is related to the updates.

    Not really saying I don't believe you, but that is the first I have read of anyone getting "shocked" by the home button. Hot, yes, some say it could BURN - which I'm also skeptical of since I've done temperature readings on several devices that exhibit this issue, but shocked is shocking.

    Any updates? Why is this happening, and can somebody get an official response from Apple? I buy 2nd year iPhone and I am dissapointed!! iPhone 6 was also full of bugs and defects. Now my 6S has a sound distortion problems. Anyone please get an official response and lets get together to sue this company. They shouldn't be even getting $100 for this crap. Apple must get sued for all of this.

    What do you mean sound distortion? I have been with Tmobile since 2003. Not once did I ever get a complaint about my voice being muffled or my voice getting cut off. However, ever since I bought the 6s last month, literally, every single person tells me that my voice is getting cut off. When I say every single person, I mean every single person. If this wasn't the internet, I would post my number on here so you could all call it and see for yourself. The most frustrating part is that I run my business through my cell phone. My phone is so useless that I had to borrow my neighbor's phone to make phone calls today. An all-time low!! I came to this thread initially because I had the blank screen/hot home button issue. But if you want to talk about sound distortion, it makes me want to throw my 6s into the wall.

    Have you upgraded to 9.1? I had a long chat with Apple and they assured me that this upgrade would take care of the problem. And I leaned hard since I have had the phone 2 weeks and got it for a month long trip to India leaving tomorrow morning. I spoke both with customer service and safety. I have not had any problems since the upgrade, and only see one second hand report of the problem with some one who has upgraded- and I wonder if it was the beta 9.1?

     

    As far as voice distortion- no idea at all.

    About the sound distortion. Try to play the "opening" sound at max volume on the speakers and see if the sound is distorted by listening carefully. I think on full battery however the problem disappears - hilarious. Apple are stealing our money.

     

    Anyway regarding the touchid getting hot and having problems - when it happened to you was your phone facedown or not? IT could be related

    9.1 - I restarted and so far, it hasn't happened again.
    I do want to report it to Apple so that at least it's recorded that I have an issue with the phone.
