Files deleted from desktop after PRAM reset

I have been experiencing slow start up times so I ran a PRAM reset. After the reset, my computer turned on and my desktop folders disappeared.

I cannot find the files in them, or the folders anywhere on the computer. I have searched the finder and it seems to be gone.

I have a MacBook Pro, 13 inch

Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 4 GB, 1333 MHz DDR3

I have 94.5 GB free of 499.98 GB

I recently cleaned out a lot of folders, applications and large files to free up room on the hard drive, but those desktop files remained.

Any guidance in how I can get this content back would be great. I do not have a recent backup.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
