how do I stop iTunes from opening every time I plug in my iPhone?

I basically never want to use iTunes. But every time I plug my phone in to charge it, whatever computer I'm on seems to think I want to sit and wait for a program I never use to open. Even more annoying, it overrides the F7-F8-F9 music player keys to function in iTunes instead of Spotify, where I actually listen to music. Is there some way to make iTunes never open automatically, or uninstall it completely? I can't find any settings that seem to disable this fascism. Help.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), work computer

This item should not be marked as solved. I want my phone to continue syncing. But I don't want iTunes to open up everytime I connect my phone via USB or switch between hotspot and WiFi network. This issue has been happening for years, and still Apple has yet to come up with a solution that doesn't either limit iPhone functionality or otherwise drive users completely crazy.
