Q: Slow data transfer on Time Capsule, 802.11n, WPA2

I am in the UK, on a 150 Mbps Virginmedia fibre connection, using a Time Capsule 2TB 802.11n router, WPA2 Personal on 5Ghz. I am currently using a Macbook pro 13" late 2013 model to connect to the router. I am concerned that my TC and MBP rarely reach 5 MBPs during a file transfer, and I would like advice on how to get anywhere near 54Mbps under normal conditions

I have a NAS (Synology) connected to the Time Capsule by ethernet, but I normally see home network speed of downloads about 3-4 Mbps. I don't understand why it is so low?

For context, I describe below the maximum speeds under test conditions:

- Maximum internet download speed

When I use www.speedtest.net I commonly exceed 50Mbps down, 10 Mbps up, and during quiet times I can see in excess of 100 Mbps. So the router can deliver, and the MBP can receive at good speeds.

- Real world download speed

In practice I rarely receive 'real' data from a website (e.g. BBC iPlayer download, or any normal website) at greater than 2.5 Mbps. I can understand that BBC may limit download speeds for their own good reasons....but I do wonder.

Comments please?

I have taken some screenshots from Airport Utility showing my network configuration. I hope this helps. I have not changed anything yet:

    AirportUtility 1.jpg

    AirportUtility 2.jpg

I use Open DNS. Internet Options are default

    AirportUtility 3.jpg

Wireless Options are: 5Ghz network name "iParfitt 5Ghz" using United Kingdom 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n (Automatic). Channels Automatic

    AirportUtility 4.jpg

iPv4 DHCP range 10.0.1.2 to 200. NAT Port Mapping Protocol Enabled. Blocking incoming iPv6 connections, Allow incoming IPSec authentication

Please would you let me know which settings I should change? Thanks

    I cannot see anything wrong.

In your previous post you had a private IP on the wan. Now you have a standard public IP setup.

So I do not see a problem..

    Please do the following tests.

Use ethernet plugged into the TC and do a test again via speedtest.net

    Do this with wireless.. off.

Then disconnect the ethernet and do the same test using wireless.

Post me the results in both cases.

If they are dramatically different I will need to get your wireless diagnostic test results as well.

Turn off the express when you do it.. and put the Mac in the same room as the TC.

    Hello again sir,

I still haven't changed anything...to clarify the source of the info: Airport Utility. The Virgin Router (VR) is to connected to the TC by ethernet and I changed the setting in VR so that it is ethernet mode only, and no other ethernet ports are in use. So the VR only talks to the ISP and TC, and TC talks to everything else.

You mentioned in the previous post about a private IP, that was not in the 26/10 message. The source there was System Preferences/Network/TCPIP , and here is the output from that:

    SysPref Network TCPIP.jpg

Above you can see the IP address is not the same as the one in Airport Utility.

Finally, here is a snapshot from Network Utility/Info

    Network Utility Info.jpg

I will run the tests you mentioned in your last post and send the results shortly. Thanks for your continued assistance. Clive

You wireless is working as expected..

The router is 10.0.1.1 which is standard default for the TC.

Thank you for your quick response!

So after all, relatively slow download speeds from websites like the BBC cannot be improved, it seems? Do you think a more up-to-date Apple TC would make a difference? I have experimented with power line adapters, and I might give them another try.

Thanks again and I hope this thread might help some others with similar problems.
