This sounds like a simple test but can you try adjusting the brightness using the keyboard (F5 and F6)?
You can also try a PRAM reset as this deals directly with video card/sound issues.

First, from another internet device, use this Apple article to find your MBP serial number:

Once you have it, enter it into this Apple support page:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
The page will return something like this:
Respond to your own thread with what the first line reads. If your MBP is too old for the Apple page to work, you can find a simialr function on this third-party web page (click the blue letters):
