Can't open shared Google Docs/Spreadsheets on iPads

I am the technology specialist for our middle school and this year I am having problems with Google Docs/Spreadsheets working on the iPads. I have shared out google docs and spreadsheets to individual students and they are not able to type on it through safari. Then I have them try to open it from their drive app and it takes them out to docs or spreadsheet and it continuously spins and never opens. All of our apps on our students iPads are controlled by Apple Configurator but on our teacher iPads we do our own updates. So on my own iPad I have been able to open other google docs/spreadsheets that students and teachers have shared with me. What is different between the students iPads controlled by Apple Configurator and the ones that are not? This is very frustrating as a teacher! What can I do to fix it?
