Q: delete top line on keyboard

When my iPad mini recently updated, it added a line on the top of my keyboard that I want to delete.  It takes up space and makes the view of the screen smaller and I don't need the features in it.  Is there a way to do it?  I have both the "regular" ipad keyboard and the Swiftkey keyboard (which syncs with my phone) and this line is on both of them.  I didn't ask for it and don't want it.

This is NOT an improvement.

    Hello SaabSister,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iPad. Based on your description of what you are seeing above your keyboard, it sounds like you might be describing the Predictive Text bar (also referred to as Quick Type or sometimes the Shortcut Bar). You can see it in the below image with suggested variations/completions for the word "Apple":

If this is what you are describing, you may find the instructions in the following article for hiding or turning off this feature helpful:

    Hide and show the suggestions

You'll get three word or phrase options to use while you're writing a message. To hide the suggestions, swipe down. To show the suggestions, swipe up.

    Turn off predictive text

To turn off predictive text tap   or press and hold   and tap Predictive.

You can also turn off predictive text in Settings > General > Keyboard > Predictive.

Get help with your keyboard on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If this is not what you are seeing or describing, or if for any reason the above instructions do not appear to work, please let us know and we will see if we can isolate it a bit more.

    Cheers

No, was not the Predictive Text Bar.  I know what that is.  I've been using SwiftKey for years on my android phone just because they had a predictive feature and when I got my iPad, was not happy with the one they had.  So I was happy when SwiftKey came to the iPad.  As I say, I used both the Apple and the SwiftKey keyboards on the iPad.  At that time, the Apple keyboard took up less space.

This was a line ABOVE the predictive text line.

The one I wanted to remove had two arrows on it, (forward and back?), a clipboard and the shortcuts to make the text bold, italicized, underlined and apparently up and down.  It added yet another line to the keyboard (and it's slightly taller than the predictive line), so it takes up even more space for something I am viewing.  It was there before the most recent (a couple days ago) update.

Now it appears that since this latest update (I downloaded it yesterday) the predictions are in 3 spaces in between these symbols, but it's STILL on the SwiftKey keyboard above the prediction line.  The reason I want to stick with SwiftKey is because it syncs my writing style between my phone and my iPad.  (and I have no interest in getting an apple phone.  I like my Galaxy 6 Edge+ a lot)

So is it possible to remove this formatting line?  I have no use for it.

P.S.  I can send pictures of the screens with both keyboards if that's helpful.  But I'd need a place to send them.  (they'll be taken with my cell phone.)

Those are the new shortcuts to copy/paste undo, bold, italics, etc. This was added with the release of iOS 9. To turn this feature off:

    Settings/General/Keyboards/Shortcuts and turn Shortcuts OFF

    Aloga Serg.

Good catch. Too bad on Apple's keyboard you need to turn predictuve on then swipe close the shortcuts.

    Stay welk.  Bob.

I recently did a step by step to add a screenshot for anoher person. I copied it below.

Thank you for the clarification. I'm guessing it look  like my second screenshot  above but why not take a moment to learn screenshots.

Have what you want to show on the screen.

Press and release the home and power buttons at the same time, your iPad will flash. Be sure not to hold the buttons down, just press and rellease.

Write the text of your reply.

Move the cursor down two rows by tapping the return key

Tap the camera icon in the edittor bar above.

      Tap choose file.

      Tap Photo library..

      Tap All photos or Screenshots.

Tap the screenshot you want. The most recent is in the lower right

      Tap Insert image.

It's a lot of steps, just do them one at a time and let me know if you need help. I'll add a screenshot.

I dunno about that, Bob...I don't use any third-party keyboards, only the Apple on-screen iPad keyboard and toggling:

    Settings/General/Keyboards/Shortcuts

    Settings/General/Keyboards/Predictive

Toggles both of these settings on & off...no swiping necessary on the keyboard itself.

    Take care, buddy.

EDIT: wow, that's odd...now I can't enable predictive text. The setting is enabled under Settings but predictive is not working on the keyboard. If I press and hold the emoji icon, I can turn off Shortcuts but Predictive is greyed out. same on both the mini2 and Air 2. This is still under iOS 9.0.1. 9.0.2 will be installed soon.

Thank you. IOS 9.0.1 must have changed it. A couple of days ago all turning off shortcuts did was eliminate the icons leaving the gray bar. All better now.

On the Swiftkey keyboard shortcuts were above predictive taking up even mor room.

    Thanks again.

Edit. Thanks for the heads-up on IOS 9.0.2

An addendum to my edit above...

If the Predictive setting in "Settings" is enabled, It does not work when typing and the setting is greyed out when using the Emoji shortcut. If the Predictive setting in "Settings" is DISabled, the setting is then enabled (it's no longer greyed out) under the Emoji shortcut & it works as it should along with Predictive being active.

    Clarification:

Settings/General/Keyboard/Predictive: ON = predictive NOT active on actual keyboard, Predictive toggle under Emoji shortcut is greyed out

Settings/General/Keyboard/Predictive: OFF = predictive active on actual keyboard, Predictive toggle under Emoji shortcut is NOT greyed out

Is this counter-intuitive or is my brain arcing?

I'm off to install El Capitan, then iOS 9.0.2 on three devices. I may not return...

For me off is off and on is on. I'm so glad I could turn both of them off.

I found my issue. If you use the Split Keyboard option, the "Predictive" option becomes greed out...but only under the keyboard's Emoji shortcut. What makes it confusing is that the toggle is never greyed out in Settings/General/Keyboard.

    Thanks a bunch.  That worked.

One thing that might be helpful is if they'd make the predictive words darker and not the white on light grey.  I have trouble seeing that in bright light, which is another reason I like the SwiftKey keyboard.  I can choose white on black and the predicted words are much more visible.  They also have a bunch more choices but I don't get crazy with them.  I just want better visibility.

You're welcome. Glad that we were able to help...hopefully, a bit more info was generated for you between myself and Bob. I know I learned something myself with this discussion.
