Play/Pause starts playing music instead of pausing podcast

I'm having an issue with the play/pause function in IOS9. I am having this problem now that I've switched to iOS9 and iOS9.0.1. When I'm in instacast or iHeartRadio, after I press the pause button, an MP3 will start playing instead of just pausing my podcast or music. Also when I press play, the music pauses and does not play my podcast. This also occurs on the swipe up screen with all of the controls on it.

If I reboot my phone, the proper functionality is restored for a while but not permanently. I'm not sure what specific event causes it to behave improperly again.

This is on my iPhone 5S.

Similar intermittent issue on my iPhone 6 9.0.2. I have an Apple Music trial membership if that matters.

1. Music app is not running (not present in task switcher).

2. Playing a streaming podcast. Pause playback, lock phone.

3. Come back some time later, some random song from my library is now showing at the lock screen. Pressing play starts playing music instead of resuming the podcast.

4. Have to unlock the phone, open the podcast app, and resume playback from there.

Perhaps related: Music app is not running. Start may car, phone reconnects Bluetooth pairing (probably as a simple headset). Again, some random song starts playing.

Didn't have these issues with iOS 8.x.

I am having this same problem - very frustrating. In my case I am listening to an Audible audiobook while using the Waze app. Waze pauses my audiobook whenever it is making an announcement. Instead of my audiobook picking back up where it stop, instead my iphone plays some random track in my music library.

This is driving me crazy.

I pause my Downcast and:

Either music starts to play at once

Or music starts to play when I try to restart my last podcast

It also changes my apple watch to controlling music rather than controlling Downcast

The point of having the apple watch is so that I don't have to dig my phone out on busy city streets to control my podcasts or audio books.

I talked to Apple Support again today and they suggested I reset all of my phone settings

Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings

It seems to have fixed the issue for now. I will report back on what I find.

The next thing they suggested is to restore to a clean image of iOS9. Which is fine but if it takes 2 days for the problem to show up, I'm not going to run around with none of my data on my phone.

The reset all settings didn't fix it. I think I may have found out what event causes the problem to happen. It seems to happen when a podcast finishes. So if I pause just before the end of a podcast and play a different one, I should be able to avoid the problem. That isn't ideal but it might make it a little less annoying and help apple fix the bug.

I will talk to Apple again and see what they say.

I talked with Apple again. It turns out that I'm using Instacast, which is not being supported any longer. This means that it was probably not updated to reflect any changes implemented in iOS9. The whole play pause issue is probably caused by iOS8 apps running in an iOS9 environment.

Stitcher works and the iOS podcasts app works so you are good there.

The short answer is, try a new app.

I continue to have this issue, and it seems to be regardless of if I have an audio app running prior to entering my car. If I recall correctly:

iOS 9.0 - random songs start playing when I get into car.

iOS 9.0.1 - fixed?

iOS 9.0.2 - The same 20 or songs, alphabetically from my entire library - get queued up.

I just tested closing all apps, locking the phone, and getting back in the car - it's the same behavior. Incredibly frustrating. If no app was open, why enqueue a bunch of songs?

Appreciate all the information and update all of you are putting up here. I am having the same issue particularly as bpate described (with Spotify audio playback not resuming after Waze audio pauses it). I've seen one other discussion on this issue with no resolution. It can be frustrating and dangerous to have to constantly resume audio while driving with Waze open. If anyone finds a solution, please do post here. Is this an intentional move to get us to all buy new cars with Carplay built-in?? Thanks.

THIS IS AN APPLE PROBLEM.

This has happened a lot no matter which version of 9 and the version of the App (all of mine are updated). For example recently I used BT audio and listening to a podcast. I had Waze on and accidentally gestured to trigger the voice assistance. Waze prompted me, I cancelled, and then the phone started playing a random song instead of resuming my Podcast. This does this for Siri commands as well.

Further, once I start my car and the phone connects it starts to play a random song. Some times from the current playlist, sometimes not.

It does not help to restore the phone, close all apps, etc.

it also does this when I use Siri and then finish. It will change my Podcast playback to a random song. COME ON APPLE.
