Keep getting a prompt telling me iPhoto needs to be updated, but when I try to update I keep getting the prompt that it is "temporarily unavailable." This apparently began when I updated to OS El Capitan.
I've been getting the "Temporarily Unavailable" message for 2 days (as of 10 minutes ago) so iPhoto update is definitely not back. Anybody out there have an explanation?
I'm in the same boat. iPhoto was superseded by Photos so the availability of an update with a spring 2015 date on it for a product that is no longer on my Mac is strange. Hope Apple is looking into this.
If you have migrated from iPhoto to Photos, you can delete the iPhoto app (you will have to turn off Protect Apple Apps in Preferences in order to delete it). Then when you log into the App Store it won't find iPhoto to update anymore.
Has anyone heard from Apple regarding this bleeding nuisence of "temporarily unavailable" . I have "stuck fat" with Apple since 2002 and have everything that opens and shuts , that is branded Apple . I am thinking about jumping ship very shortly . Why do they ignore customer problems . Fair dinkum mate !
Do not delete iPhoto just because you have upgraded your OS and you now have Photos. As I understand this frustrating mess and as I have experienced, you must upgrade iPhoto to 9.6.1 in order for Photos to be able to read the contents of your iPhoto library. Could someone from Apple just make the upgrade available and explain to your customers why they need to do this.
Aside from the fact I'm not loving the "experience" with Yosemite or El Cap, I think I've found this threads iPhotos issue (or not). I was having a similar update and not available issues with the App store and the iPhoto. Following some of the hints and advice in these posts I searched and deleted any residual folders and disabled app references to iPhoto. In my case it eliminated the constant update iPhoto notice and hasn't seemed to cause any performance issue with the OS or Photos.
Hey Dave,
I've migrated to Photos but still get the warning about iPhoto upgrade. Where in preferences do you tell it to allow me to delete the iPhoto app?
I just get nervous because Photos is just over 50 MB and iPhoto is 1.X GB and I'm afraid I'm tossing the photos too?
This fear IS unfounded, right?
Jeff
You can do two things to get rid of the update notice.
1. You can update iPhoto - and this should also get past the "temporarily unavailable" message
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
2. Or
You can delete iPhoto.
To do this: drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash - you'll be used for your password to do that - and them empty the trash.
As for the size of the two apps: iPhoto is 1+ gig as it contains all the templates for all the books, calendars, slideshow etc. The application does not contain the Photographs. They're in your iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
Photos is only 50 mb as it has none of those templates at all. They're downloaded on demand and stored in an Application Support folder.
Thanks, Terence!
Worked like a charm!
Now that the photos have migrated to Photos I'll probably just delete iPhoto unless you can think of a reason I should keep it?
Jeff
I just deleted iPhoto, as all of my photos are in the Photos app. Now finally my OS X El Capitan is downloading! Solved all of my problems, hope it helps!
Happened to me too at the same time, and I'm still on Yosemite. Your upgrade is probably just a coincidence.
My iphoto is showing in purchases and is still in applications but with that "Not" symbol over it. When I try to drag it to the trash it does nothing but remains in applications.
Worked like a charm.
Thanks!
