Has anyone seen about this on the news? Is it correct that it can drain your data?

Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to know if Wi-Fi Assist uses cellular data. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

About cellular data settings and usage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support
With iOS 9, you can use Wi-Fi Assist to switch to cellular when Wi-Fi becomes weak or unreliable.

It can certainly increase your data usage if you are habitually in a fringe WiFi environment

Apple, did you have to bury the toggle switch beneath the list of apps using data? It's either poor UI design or intentionally hiding the feature. Hopefully it's not the latter and you've caved to the cellular providers.
