Q: Do I have to import my iPhoto library to get geotags to be recognized in Photos?

Hello

I'm on the brink of moving away from my current 252GB iPhoto library into Photos and I was wondering how it supported existing photos 'geotagged' in iPhoto?

It seems that when I geotagged a photo using iPhoto that it's just a proprietary setting in the software and does not update the EXIF data in the actual photo. I tried dragging in a single image (that had been geotagged in iPhoto) into the Photos app, and it did not recognize the location data. However, I dragged in a second image that I manually edited the EXIF data to geotag, and it worked fine.

What's the final answer on this please?

Photos will use the location data added in iPhoto if you open your iPhoto Library in Photos.

Drag the iPhoto Library onto the Photos icon in the Dock. Photos will create a converted copy, and all locations added in iPhoto will be there.
