Jan 13, 2016 12:13 AM in response to MichelPMby Vestfold,Sooo....that would be....."Apple, it just works.....but.....these devices still lag behind a full blown computer with s much more robust and stable operating systems. Mobile computing platforms are still more finicky and fragile in their operation. NO computing device is perfect and nothing, NOTHING people create is EVER going to be perfect, no matter what the type of product/price is!"?
Is that it?
Might I suggest an alternative?; "Apple; it just works...kind of...sometimes, except when it doesn't"

Jan 13, 2016 1:26 AM in response to Vestfoldby MichelPM,If you really understood my post, I was referencing the whole, general mobile computing industry as well as any product industries as a whole.
Apple is no different in terms of product issues in this competing industry. Plus, basically, Apple only has to compete with itself. Which seems to be getting harder and harder every year, despite Apple's wealth as a company.
I have worked in engineering and industrial design early in my career. No company that developes products for the consumer are going to have a perfect working product! Ever!
People aren't perfect. The things people make aren't ever going to be perfect, either!
For Apple product issues, EVERYONE blames and points fingers at Tim Cook. But the real blame maybe lays with the strengths and weaknesses of all the different product disciplines that go into making one of these devices.
Apple is much larger company now and maybe they don't employ the cream of the crop in terms of really brilliant people or they are having a tougher time finding great, talented people to work for them. Who knows?
Even with brilliant employees, it still takes any product industry, even Apple, a few years of iterations to finally get a product idea and product line to a trusted and stable state that consumer can really have confidence in.
The iPhone had a 3-4 year headstart over the iPad line. That is why the iPhone is doing much better in terms of design, reliability, stabillity and feature set and customer loyalty.
Even the iPhone had issues though earlier, different iterations. Remember the BIG issue with the iPhone antennas... "AntennaGate"?
Look at the automotive industry for crying out loud! There are more major recalls in an industry where the costs of automobile are much more expensive than the costs of most consumer electronics!!!
If you didn"t like my very rational explanation, which was a very, VERY gross generalization, of all consumer product industries, then, I really don't have anything. else to comnent on and you are well entitled to your opinion.
I am just, basically, stating, in more or less rudimentary terms, that no matter what product you end up buying and no matter its cost, it is going to have some problem, defect or issue in its exucution to some degree, small or large.
So, no matter what phone/tablet maker you decide to purchase from or what OS it is running, they are all going to have their own issues, bugs or quirks.
Apple is not immune to these facts, but at least they try harder than the competition to minimize the flaws and issues as much as they possibly can
That is what you are really paying for when you purchase an Apple product!
A better consumer product experience...most times.
I'll step out of the pumpkin patch and go to sleep, now ( with regards and respect to Charles Shultz, Charlie Brown, Linus Van Pelt and The Great Pumpkin!).

Jan 13, 2016 10:40 AM in response to MichelPMby wbgPhil,"So, no matter what phone/tablet maker you decide to purchase from or what OS it is running, they are all going to have their own issues, bugs or quirks.
Apple is not immune to these facts,"
And so what you hear all of these folks saying is that Apple DOES have a problem with the newest IOS on these devices and it cannot be fixed by the simplistic approaches provided so far for most folks experiencing the issue. Yes they have been tried, yes the device has almost ALL of its original space available. Yes all background apps are shut and app services turned off where possible and yet,,,,,and yet, the issue persists and ONLY since the newest IOS went on the device which functioned perfectly prior with all its storage usage and application use. And providing the same processes in bolder text or larger fonts wont make them any more valid a fix. Saying it doesnt make it true, nor does saying it louder. I didnt expect an answer here as I had already read the entirety of the posts and saw no answer I hadnt tried. I was just wanting to validate for the many who have the issue that it is NOT them, it is definitely an outstanding issue for Apple. Not that Apple will care really since it does make it more likely they will sell a few more ipad airs in near future. Anyway, feel free to think all is fine but obviously it is not or this chain wouldnt go on with the complaints of the issue.

Jan 13, 2016 7:53 PM in response to wbgPhilby abouma,I totally agree with your post. I can no longer rely on my iPad to do the functions that I did before the latest update. It constantly crashes, I'm getting tired of trying the different workarounds with no positive results. I believe the only fix is to go back to ver. 7 before I started having any issues. That won't happen, so I'm stuck with a bookend.

Jan 15, 2016 4:37 PM in response to MichelPMby Vestfold,Afraid I understood your post all too well.
Possibly somewhere in the "pumpkin patch" is an admission "it just works" is probably an inaccurate marketing pitch.
GIven the chronic ios9 iPad issues that do not appear resolved by the plethora of well meaning solutions provided n this forum, at least, again, finally, maybe, some, extraordinarily grudging admission there's a problem.
But you did identify an error in my post. It should actually be:
"Apple, it just works....(insert 8 paragraphs of MichelPM qualifications here)"
Personally, excuses and defaults to "nothing's perfect" are the sign of a company in serious decline. Recommend reference to their share price in this regard.
Either "it's just works" or it does not. Period.

Jan 15, 2016 4:47 PM in response to aboumaby Vestfold,Look, I should say (after trying ALL the solutions presented on these forums) iOS 9 has not rendered my ipad2 totally unusable.
But it's been rendered a stuttering, crashing, locking up, wholly unreliable piece of hardware. My Android smartphone is infinitely more reliable now. In fact my Android "just works".
I Would also add that, unlike ios 8 which Apple seemed to (extremely grudgingly) acknowledge was flawed and updated repeatedly and relatively quickly, they have reverted to an undesirable form with iOS 9 and have dug in their heels and/or can't figure out what's wrong with their own iOS.
Either way is a worry.

Jan 16, 2016 11:47 AM in response to Vestfoldby DF1337,I made the expensive switch to Apple products (which cost 3x more) 12 years ago exactly to avoid spending countless hours fixing the buggy Microsoft Windows. Now after spending so much time with this **** slow iPad 2, I'm ready to throw a temper tandem and smash it to bits.
-
Jan 16, 2016 1:12 PM in response to DF1337by MichelPM,I have posted, here, (already several times) a list of suggested fixes/solutions and my own modified backup/restore proceudures that are all designed to try and help older iPad users deal with their iPad performance issues.
Have you tried any of these? Have you tried my my restore procedure?
Look through this post to find my most recent posting of these procedures as I routinely update my list and revise my modified backup/restore procedure.
Good Luck!

Jan 19, 2016 8:50 AM in response to MichelPMby Southcoastphil,Yes, Michel, you certainly have *repeatedly* posted ideas here, as well as innumerable defenses of the "gods" at Apple, as fallible as they might have turned out to be, in your opinion.
Since ios 9.x, my iPad2 has become all but unusable, where it was all but indispensable in the past, even w ios8.
I've just spent THREE hours going thru every single "fix" you've proposed, including full backup to itunes, complete wipe and re-setup, hard reset, check all settings to make sure that many of the "new and improved" functionality has been disabled, etc.
Nice try.
This now-piece-of-junk remains glacially slow.
I know that i will sound like a ranting and disgruntled soon-to-be-former owner of an iPad, but would it be asking too much if, after *three hours*
of fooling around with this, I could at least send a text message? (I know, I know, demanding as all heck, aren't I?) At least I was able to send a text earlier today to the same (non-iMessage) number. Nope. No dice. every recipient is treated as "not registered with iMessage"
(I can, of course, still use my iphone to send a simple text message, though.)
As for your comments re: Safari, I've never--oops, I should use your language here--"NEVER, EVER" had a problem with Safari in the past.
I had switched to Apple products about 6 years ago, for the promise of "simple to use".
What baloney!

Jan 19, 2016 9:55 AM in response to Southcoastphilby MichelPM,Ya Know,
My list of procedures and modified backup/restore HAS, so far, worked for, now, over a dozen older iPad 2 and 3 users to date.
Everyone's iPad is different in the types of apps that may have got installed that may have affected the operations of some older iPads.
I have no control over what users have installed on their devices AND, IF they have jailbroke their iPads in the past (which can cause all sorts of issues that are beyond what I can help with).
I made no claims of success for every user that tries these, but continue to post my procedures as these HAVE worked for me AND others and it is ALWAYS my hope and intentions ithese will work for everyone, but there have been cases that it has not.
I have NEVER had any issues with ANY iOS upgrades on my older iPads as I have always avoided doing them using the over the air WiFi method AND always chose the more reliable method of upgrading my devices connected to my computer using iTunes to do the upgrades/updates.
You appear to be one of the, unattentionally, unlucky ones.
At any point in time, did you ever upgrade your iPad's iOS using WiFi? If, so, I strongly believe that iOS upgrades have been affccted by Wifi datat download errors that can happen and can't be fixed once the damaged iOS is installed. The only fix for this is to wait for the next upgrade/update and dothe upgrade via iTunes on a computer to see if that will "fix" things.
NONE of this worked for you, at all?
Even the modified backup/restore?
You have seen NO improvement, whatsoever.
Nothing.
The modification to this procedures is once the backup is complete,to disconnect the iPad from the computer and completely set the iPad up as a new, from the iPad, itself, giving your iPad a "clean slate", as it were. Then, set it up as new in iTunes using the latest iTunes 12.3.2.
You got NO improvement there, either?
DId you try another hard reset after you did the restore?
All I can say is I am sorry none of this has worked for you.
It is not my fault.
If you followed everything exactly as I spelled out and you iPad is still running like garbage, I do not know what to add.
Have you tried just running your iPad without WiFi or Bluetooth on just to make sure your iPad isn't being affected by your internet connection. and speed?
One other thing I have added to my list recently as some users have reported to me that turning off Find My Phone/iPad, something I wouldn't really recommend, in Settings App under iCloud has improved their iPad performance. I don't know why this would be unles it's a bug that has only affected some iPads. It has not affected mine.

Jan 19, 2016 12:29 PM in response to MichelPMby Johnandrewriley,Dear all, happy apple users
i promised to feed back my success In solving the crashing. Since I originally posted the iPad has behaved its self like new! For your benefit my solution was to do a full restore to factory settings with 9.2, set up as a new ipad. I did not restore the back up..,
good ood luck all

Jan 21, 2016 12:17 PM in response to Johnandrewrileyby BuddyCthulhu,Installed 9.2.1 today. Restart after update. Three minutes later, crash to reboot. Same as it ever was.
-
Jan 28, 2016 5:52 PM in response to Johnandrewrileyby Mrsdaysie,I was having the crashing issue (multiple times per hour). The iPad would then take about 10 minutes to restart each time. I also found that after plugging it in to charge, that it would restart itself automatically after about 10 minutes. This was going on since the update to 9.0 (and I had been doing updates religiously as they came out) and was so frustrating! Yesterday I decided that I just needed to try to clear the iPad completely (Erase all content and Settings) after doing a full backup, because what good was the iPad in the state it was in... Once I did the full backup in iTunes, I did the Erase from the iPad (all while plugged into the computer with iTunes running). After starting the erase feature, iTunes said it was downloading the software for the iPad (and at this point I was tired so left it plugged in all night to let it do its thing). In the morning I just set up the iPad like it came new from the box, then did a restore from my backup...and it hasn't crashed once today! It's fast again too! I'm hoping that I haven't jinked myself!
-
Jan 28, 2016 6:09 PM in response to Mrsdaysieby MichelPM,Yup,
A complete, clean backup/restore really makes a big diffrence.
Especially if you have never did this procedure for many years.
My older iPad 2 and 3 models are running fantastic on the latest iOS.
I was completely surprised by the end result!
I am glad to learn that this has worked for you, too!

Feb 5, 2016 5:38 AM in response to MichelPMby organum,OK, finally put aside the time to watch paint dry and, like Windows, take Michael's advice to restore the whole iPad.
what I discovered was that the thing still crashed after a full restore BUT I then noticed that songs were taking up a huge amount of memory so deleted them all saving over 7G.
Sad thing was still the same, Facebook crashed as did Chrome and Safari. I did however get suspicious that Facebook always, if it didn't crash first time, always took an age to boot up and was slow.
i Deleted facebook reinstalled and now everything is stable and fb works really fast.
so it seems that Apple are just as bad as Windows where an uninstall and reinstall often fixes crashes. A sad time when, as others have pointed out, Apple is no longer a 'it just works' solution.
anyway a big thanks to Michael for his perseverance but I think everyone here is reluctant to do the restore as it just takes so much time. FYI mine was four hours in total.
