Q: El Capitan running slowly?

Is anyone else having the issue of your Mac running wicked slow after the new El Capitan update? Word, Safari, Preview, and iTunes wouldn't open- they froze and I had to force quit them. Even typing this there is a major lag and the pinwheel appears. What's up with that? So far I hate how slow it's making my mac.

No, I didn't.  I used what came with the kit.  What would be the issue with the cable?  From what I've experienced, cables either work or they don't.

Change the cable, it's a common issue

What does that have to do with this thread. Please start your own thread and explain your own problem in it.

I just tried the cable from my wife's MacBook Pro (same year as mine), which works fine with her new SSD/Hybrid drive, and provides her the improved speed and performance expected from the upgrade.  Unfortunately, it didn't make any difference in my Mac.

Is it common for an SSD to be the cause of 1 to 3-second lags in function, and even longer delays resulting in frequent rainbow wheels?  Since there is no drive spin-up time, I wouldn't have thought so.  I'm still running with a skeleton load since it would be pointless to load any more if I'm going to have to try another drive.

I've just learned that in accordance with the upgrade kits instructions, my SSD was formatted using my old drive before the fresh download and install of the OS.  This now surprises me as I wouldn't have thought the format for a disk drive would be compatible with an SSD, so I wasn't considering the possibility of a legacy / corruption issue.  So I think the next obvious step is to wipe the SSD and format it using my wife's SDD/Hybrid and then do the 5th OS install.

... or is there another option to formatting from my wife's drive?

If safari is slow some trouble shooting steps are there :

open safari > safari > safari preferences > security > enable java scripts & all options , remove if any extensions .

If any anti virus , third party software /app from the system is installed please uninstall it and its plist should also be removed  from system library & user library .

Go to user library ( hidden library ) : click on go > hold option key & don't release it > library .

Remove the contents of following folders by selecting them , can use command + A , & delete them command + delete into trash .

Caches , cookies , application support , saved application state  , logs  , launch agents .

particularly in safari folder if the user is using bookmarks select all contents except bookmarks & delete them into trash.

restart from apple logo & empty the trash .

Don't get panic fresh new contents will be created once again .

Lastly you have to once again configure web mail , i cloud ( you must have four digit verification code ) , settings in system preferences .

also for spinning beach ball issue : execute safe mode & run SMC , PRAM .

The format method of an SSD is identical to that of an HDD.

    The lags are not normal.

It's so global, and so consistent, it's almost as though it's slowing down the processor to a great degree. This type should be easy to fix, so I'm betting on a quick update, rather than making invasive changes to my system and application files, unless, you've been waiting for a good time to clean up all the crap in your system and free up space etc., an inevitable project that I for one keep putting off!

I returned the SSD for another one, which works great.  No problems at all.

    Thanks all for your contributions.

Hi .Maybe this thread is old but i have same problem too. After many attemps with everything and tried everything offline clean installations online from app store ..going back to Yosemite (little better)  but my iMac late 2013 is so slow and unresponsive compaired to my old imac with Snow Leopard.

Theoretically should be faster because of better hardware i7 and much ram and 6gb sata speed but is twice slower.

i cant do anything fast  having problems not keep settings, textedit is not so good as it was with SL, and so many problems that cannot fit to write them here.

My machine after an extended testing does not have any hardware problem because i was wondering why is so slow.

Problems with Gestalt cannot recognise almost any application except Apple applications that made for EL or yOS

Activity monitor is full of proccesses when SL had only 45 or 50 at top.. now if they run only 170 will be luck.

The only think is doing well is to have the ability to connect to icloud to iphotos to i messages to "i" all these things

like i bought a smartphone ...is like i have an giant aliminum smartphone and the only thing can do is to connect to internet and cannot be able to do my own things i want.

problems with keychain all the time keychain, first aid missing , disk utility is awfull really i dont dont know what happened with Apple..

    they had amazing oreating systems...

For someone that want iphone things is nice but for me that i dont care about these and i dont have iphone ipad  or ipod and Appletv they are useless...

Sorry for all these negative things but when you spend so much money for a machine that is capable to do so many things and cannot  then i getting sad. Really sad dear APPLE...

If you feel like it is a good choice then yes.

    I also found this:

    http://techsviewer.com/fix-mac-os-x-el-capitan-slow/

Since the public release, It is very slow, at times. It will go off into the ozone for several seconds with pinwheel running and running. It definitely has affected Excel and Word. Hesitation sometimes unbearable.

Not running well at all at my iMac late 2013 ...i have done everything. even Apple say is ok but all i see is a slow, unresponsive ,unpredictable iMac. i using it mainly offline and connected only at internet in extremely situations for updates. i dont use icloud,imessages.facetime,chat..nothing from all these things. Even like that is so slow like it have glue inside.

Not even close to my old iMac with Snow Leopard. (:

i very sad. Nothing is working. Not even Yosemite.

you clearly installed or upgraded to El Capitan? You try to make USB bootable to reinstall El Capitan. Remember, back up your data. i'm running El Capitan fine on Macbook Pro late 2012!
