Q: Airplay issue with El Capitan

Having a reliability issue while using airplay with el capitan to apple tv 3! it will either work after a long delay (and not turn off) or won't work at all. My iPhone 6S iOS 9.0.2 works fine with airplay and my home network is not an issue. Anyone else have this issue?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Sad to say that I'm experiencing the same issue as everyone else here.  On El Capitan, latest version.  No Dropbox, no VPN, wifi is fine, AirPlay just drops a few seconds after connecting.   Completely unusable.    Really hope they fix soon.  Tested both at home and at work.

    Hey Chris,

I changed the firewall preferences.  I'm not able to turn off airplay on my macbook.  I've gone to settings and it's worked fine before I downloaded el captain.  My only option is OFF.  Any suggestions?

Similar issue.  Trying to mirror or extend my display from my iMac (OS X El Capitan) to my new Apple TV 4th gen.  I get a black screen when I select my apple TV from the airplay option on my iMac.  I'm getting audio, but no display.

I Solved my problem by deleting the DUET software which is for having iPad as second monitor.  And this interfering the Apple TV mirroring the iMac.  If you happen to have it installed, delete it.  This is my solution.

I did this, i still cannot turn airplay "on" on my macbook and my apple tv cannot be updated for some reason.  Why are all my apple products failing me?

Hi. Exactly the same problem as KCichoski, with an Apple TV 3 and an iMac 27" 2013, up to date of course... I've tried to restore my Apple TV, without success. What the **** is going on?

Same issue - black screen when AirPlaying to Apple TV 4th gen. I have been on the phone to support twice and my Apple TV 4th gen has been replaced. Re-installed OSX El Cap without any documents or applications. Worked great...mirrored and extended to the Apple TV but then bringing things back from time machine brought back whatever it is that is blocking the connection. I am a newbie Mac user and have installed and uninstalled Spalshtop before but something somewhere is making this connection stop for me.

This may be a little too late for you now but I have been able to fix my issue.

The short version, I created an el Capitan boot disk on an 8GB USB drive using the free app Disk Maker, downloaded the latest El Capitan from the App Store (10.11.5) and did a clean install of El Capitan. Once I rebooted my PC, Airplay was working properly.

Unfortunately, I then lost Airplay functionality again when I reinstalled my backed up Apps using time machine. After a bit of investigation, it turns our that Airparrot was the cause of my problem. Although I had uninstalled the application some months ago  there were still some driver files in the system.

I manually deleted the following files at the Terminal command line using the sudo command,

    APExtFramebuffer  located at: System/Library/Extensions

AirParrotDriver  located at: System/Library/Extensions   AND  /Library/Extensions

then emptied the trash to be on the safe side and did a system restart.Once I'd done that, it was back to normal - 8 months later!

I thought I'd mention the second bit because, apparently there are other third part apps that have been causing the same issue. e.g.. Air Display, Splash Screen, so it might be possible that you have an uninstalled app that still has it's driver files sitting in the system causing the same type of problem?

If you're comfortable with the command line, this would be the quickest solution.

The more time consuming option is obviously to do a clean install and manually install all the relevant applications that you are still using. Obviously, by reinstalling the applications using Time Machine is a lot easier but of course, you run the risk of reinstalling data from a third party application that may have been the cause of the problem.

Anyway, I hope that you have already sorted your issue, whatever the cause may have been. If not, then maybe this will be of some assistance. Good luck.

THIS POST!  IS EVERYTHING!!!  Finally fixed my laggy Airplay on Late 2013 MBP Retina!  Oh my god thank you so much.  This was driving me berserk.  Still annoying it's a work around, but THANK YOU!

    for others:

Activity Monitor, sort by CPU %

close the top two, which were for me AirPlayXPCHelper and another one (slightly different than Kamalbadreshany's but same basic name, can't remember the exact process name).  Airplay turns off, turn back on airplay... it WORKS!

None of this other bluetooth off, update, restart, etc etc answers did anything.  but this worked for me.  Thank you!

    Hi shifty_nz,

Indeed ! Thanks a lot for your help. I've done a clean install and it works now ! I wanted to do it a long time ago, so today it was a good opportunity. And Airplay feature works like a charm now. So, shame on Duet Display/Mac conflict... I'll never reinstall Duet Display.
Thank you all for your help !

    Was this resolved?

I have a 13 inch Macbook Air mid-2012 running El Capitan Version 10.11.6. Airplay to my ATV4 was working fine with both audio and video until about a week ago. ATV4 is running the latest update.

Now the Macbook will struggle to connect to the ATV4 via airplay and when it does it will be very choppy, play the audio but no visual - just a plain black screen on my TV.

Airplay from my iPhone to ATV4 works as it always has, so I assume it is something that has happened through my Macbook that is causing this issue?

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

    edit: never had AirParrot
