Q: Airplay issue with El Capitan

Having a reliability issue while using airplay with el capitan to apple tv 3! it will either work after a long delay (and not turn off) or won't work at all. My iPhone 6S iOS 9.0.2 works fine with airplay and my home network is not an issue. Anyone else have this issue?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    Dear TotoleHeros1000,

Have you updated your ATV2 via iTunes by connecting it directly to your computer using a mini USB cable? I also use ATV2 with MBPR15 and doing that, along with the El Capitan update fixed my problem. Please try this. Thanks.

Thank you mmsfo, I will give a try to your solution. But I must confess that I'm quite fed up with this! Sounds like, in the Apple World, things are going the same way they used to be in the old days of Windows/PC. I am seriously considering to change environment and give a chance to alternative solutions after more than 25 years spent with Apple...

I also have no connectivity via Airplay to my Zeppelin Air and my UE boombox from El Capitan on my Macbook Air. I can see both devices using Airplay from my iPhone 6 and from my iPad. It is inconceivable to me that Apple's flagship product (their computer) will not support Airplay while the iPhone and iPad continue to support Airplay. Like the previous commenter, I am ready to try my hand again in the PC world (Windows, Galaxy, Android, etc.) to get away from issues in the Apple world that do not get solved in a timely manner. By the way, I just upgraded El Capitan to V10.11.2 and it made no difference. It is no coincidence that the Apple slogan is no longer "It Just Works". It would not be a good marketing campaign to have a more accurate slogan like "If Our Designers and Troubleshooters Feel Like It, Perhaps We Will Take a Look at Our Most Important Features Not Working On Our Flagship Devices". Please fix this issue!

I also had the same problems with my MacBookPro5.2 (mid 2009, El Capitain) and ATV3.

Updating and restarting everything several times did'nt work. And I did not want to disable the firewall.

But chaining the WIFI channel solved my problems right away.

I would also like to understand what "chaining the WIFI channel" means. Do you perhaps mean "changing" the WIFI channel? Regardless, using one of Apple's flagship features (Airplay) should not be so complicated. It used to be that it was possible to use Apple products with very little technical knowledge. That was Apple's beauty and elegance. You could accomplish very technical tasks with minimal technical knowledge. My how times have changed!

    Hi TotoleHeros1000 and Vangard111
I changed my wifi channel on my Airport Extreme. It was set to Automatic.

In IStumpler, an App you can get for MacOS, I saw many other Routers (like an Airport Extreme) using the same WiFi channel. It used channel 3 on 2,4 GHz and 38 on 5 GHz.

You can easily see what channel you are using on a Mac. Hold down the 'alt' button, and click on the WiFi icon, at the top of the screen, in the right corner.

In iStumpler I could see, almost no-one where using, channel 4-6, and 48 at 5Ghz.

So in the AirPort-Tool (I think it is called in English) I set my Wifi to Manuel Channel settings and set the channel to 5.

And Bingo - AirPlay worked again.

I hope this helps, it did help me and I have airplay working now on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) running El Capitan.

My ATV is ATV 2. For a long time I could not upgrade the firmware from 5.3 but after plugging it into my Macbook I used I tunes to download the latest firmware/software. It upgraded to 6.1.

Lo and behold, airplay activated and is now as good as it gets. Although I will say it doesn't work on my iPhone 4s for some reason.

    regards,

    cairodai

Had the same problem, but I did have sound. After days of searching I simply fixed it by restarting my MBP

My issue was resolved once I quit a program called "Knock."  Once I quit the program the icon showed up as usual and I was able to resume using Airplay again.  Hope this helps someone.  It was driving me crazy!

Is Downgrading to Yosemite the only way to solve this problem? or wait till apple fixes this problem? But when will it happen?. Do they even read all the user´s issues? . I wish that downgrading was a lot easier than it is, Apple is blowing real bad with El Capitán I mean El Crapitan.

Thank you so much.  This has been driving me nuts.  Only reason I bought the ATV was to mirror my Mac.  The interfering login items were Android related and a Sandisk item apparently related to a USB Flash drive I own.  Hopefully it'll work with my firewall turned back on.

I bought a new MBP changing from windows. Airplay *****, it keeps dropping out and losing connection. I bought a stereo with airplay and this piece of crap MBP. Not the experience I was hoping for. Really this thing can't send a signal to a stereo 5 feet away. I even put the router right next to the stereo. Kinda defeats the purpose of having wifi. I can buy a much cheaper computer that doesn't work. I've got several other programs that can stream from my pc to my stereo and I can even send HD vid to my tv. WOW! Good thing I still got the box. This thing is going back. I can also use DLNA with the stereo. At least something works.
