There was a substantial recall program for the MacBook Pro 6,2 that failed certain graphics tests, but it has long since expired.
The problem was though to be some defective graphics chips, which could not handle fast graphics switching at high speed, which MAY have been compounded by soldering failures due to overheating.
Repair on your own at this late date would involve finding a service that can remove the old surface-mount graphics chip and replace it with a correctly-soldered NEW graphics chip. Re-soldering the old chip will NOT suffice!
Reducing the problem can be accomplished by using the third-party utility gfxcardstatus to force the use of the integrated graphics, and never attaching an external display (which forces the use of the discrete graphics and makes the problem worse).
Returning to an older version of Mac OS X may improve stability.
