Today, September 30, I installed OS X 10.11, El Capitan. Apple Mail opens and then instantly crashes.

For me, problem was related with the gmail account, and I found the solution by user enaut here: apple mail crashes after OSX 10.11. Removed the gmail account from System Preferences --> Internet Accounts, and added again. Just unchecking Mail there was not enough.

I installed El Capital and now my mail instantly crashes. I have looked over these and have been trying to do some of them, but because my mail crashes almost instantly, I can't make any progress. I disabled some of my mail accounts. I was able to notice that my primary email account is a POP but for some reason it's listed as an IMAP. I keep trying to change it. I was thinking of just deleting them all and starting over, but I don't even get a chance to do anything because it crashes after a few seconds. Now what to do?

Just to be sure, this is the sequence I've followed, after Mail crashed:

    1) remove the Google account using System Preferences --> Internet Accounts (not using the Mail preferences)

    2) launch Mail, and no crash

    3) quit Mail

    4) add again the Google account using System Preferences --> Internet Accounts  (not using the Mail preferences)

    5) launch Mail, and no crash

Don't know if this is a Google-only account problem though...

TThank you!! I will try but it doesn't seem to be my google acct that is the problem. I think it's my optonline that is causing more problem.

One of my users had this problem. When they launched mail, it just crashes. I went through loads of checks. Firstly I logged into webmail. That worked with the username and password. Next, I tried removing preference files and went through all the corrupt mail steps. I logged in as a different user and reset up the mail account, that still crashed. I put my user details in, worked a treat.

I then changed the user's password and all worked correctly. It turns out their password was 17 characters, including 1 number. It seems that mail does not like passwords this long. No special characters, just lowercase letters and a single number. All fixed.
