Q: Outlook for Mac 2011 on OS X 10.11 hangs during account sync operation

I didn't see any issues with Office 2011 during the El Capitan beta. Wonder what changed with the final release. If I believed in conspiracies , it would seem like Microsoft just wants you to upgrade to Office 2016.

I suggest using Apple Mail until this is fixed.

Microsoft acknowledged the issue. Their current "workaround" is don't upgrade to 10.11. Surprise!! See the link:

Outlook webmail is your and my friend until MSFT releases a fix. Hopefully the fix will come in a day or two.

There is plenty of people in different forums stating this issue since several beta versions and of course the GM of El Capitan... I find unbelievable that it was not fixed before. Office is, like it or not, the most used software for productivity and this issue should have been solved before.

I solved the issue with downgrade or any other solution, any is my case probsbly could help you.

run outlook in low resolution.

Open the info of the otulook application (from finder) and select "open in low resolution".

restart outlook and work.

I beleive this is related to the new metal engine of osx 10.11. I hade same problem when i moved to retina macbook and otulook was not updated.

Sorry I make a word mistake in my answer. I didn't downgrade, just flag the open low resolution application run.

Hi Micheleit, I followed your instructions but Outlook still didn't work for me I restarted both the app and Macbook Pro. None worked.

Strange, but even to me it stopped working. I worked a bit 'of hours, and then I thought that the solution was final. but now no longer anything unless Microsoft does fly a patch.

Uninstall Office correctly and then reinstall.

I seem to have got it to work... need someone to try what I did...

1. Turn off Wifi (internet connection) and launch Outlook 2011 for Mac.

2. Outlook menu -> Work Offline

3. Turn back on Wifi/Internet connection

4. Tools menu -> Run Schedule -> Edit Schedules...

5. Uncheck mark (disable) the schedules. For me this was:

     Empty Deleted Items Folder

     Send & Receive All

     Send All

6. Outlook menu -> Work Offline (to remove checkmark)

Disabling the schedules doesn't seem to have any impact on my one Exchange email account. Still able to receive and send without clicking Send/Receive. Hoping someone else can try these steps and see if it helps.

Not working for me. As soon as I remove the checkmark of Work Offline, the outlook becomes connected to the exchange server and crashes.

I wonder what's different in our setup... It's been working solid for nearly 20 minutes now with no crashes. I'm using SSL to connect. Default port. No encryption certs.

UPDATE: Was good for approx. 1 hour. Now it's crashing again...
