ImageCaptureCore error -9905

I have seen no posts about this one so here it is. All I'm doing is importing my photos into Photo on Mac OS X running Yosemite. When Photos appears to be finished, it tells me all of my .MOV files and one .JPG "The operation could not be completed (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9905)" and that's pretty much it.

My Mac has had no special migration or rebuild...it's been running on this OS for quite some time.

My iPhone 5S is nothing special, either. Other than the fact that it has lousy storage (32G is the max you can get....bah!!!!!!!!), standard stuff going on.

Not sure what I should do. Suggestions?

My most recent iPhone 5S isn't currently listed under "My Products". I have a 5S running 8.4 and don't want to upgrade at the moment 😟

Must be something about the Tokyo store... I went there last year as I had real trouble connecting iPhone to iPhoto. The guy looks at my phone and pulls out what was effectively a straightened out paper clip. He digs out all the fluff from my pockets thats accumulated in the slot at the base of the phone, and all works well. Which leads me to this page. I too have the -9905 error, read the post about wiggling the cable. Instead I used a paper clip to remove fluff and voila ! No more -9905.

Sorry if you bought a new cable instead of a paper clip.

Started having same problem recently. It appears to be videos that are the problem. If I select only the photos and "import X selected" it imports those just fine.

If I then select all my videos, I get the same error. If I only do a few at a time, I usually get them all...but even then it randomly gives the error. The odd part about the error message is that it does not tell you which file had the error (see image below). If I keep trying they all eventually import, so whatever the file was it was only a problem once, then uploaded just fine on another attempt.

The other interesting thing is it disconnects the camera from Photos after the error, so you have to unplug the lightning cable and then plug it back in.

I can't find any rhyme nor reason for when it will or will not import a video, file size, video length, number of videos importing don't seem to matter other than the more you try the likelier it seems you are to have an error. Sometimes I can do 5 at a time with no problems, sometimes I get the error after the third video when trying 5 at a time. Sometimes I can import ten at a time without issue.

If anyone solves this I would love to hear about it. I have read other similar posts where people have rebuilt the library and it did not help.

I have the exact same problem, but can't isolate the problem files ( I too have blanks where the file names should be in that table)

I only use the native Camera app to shoot videos, but it seems to me the issue lies with videos in my case too ( it's hard to be sure because I can't see which files are actually causing the issue!) - However Photo app crashes every time before I can download anything from the phone.

I use these apps to shoot still photos: The native Camera app, Photo Noir , Cortex Cam, Camera+, and (rarely) Pure.

Anyone had any luck getting to the bottom of this?

I've been trying to solve this for a couple of months now, still no solution, BUT I have followed other's suggestions and tried to find elusive .plist files and delete (some found, some not, deleted, restarted no difference) and get same error in Image Capture.

Last night I reinstalled El Cap (not a clean install, I don't have time to set up from scratch right now), no difference. I don't think it is OSX because the same behaviour on both my Macs.

Phone recognized by iTunes, Photos immediately, but is automatically removed from Photos sync after exactly 01:02-14. Oddly, the number of photos to be downloaded varies with each attempt...? Still remains active in iTunes..

Its not an 'across the board' iOS issue, this morning I tried my iPad 4 and iPad Mini3 and both synced photos (old and fresh, Photo Steam and Camera Roll) as they should.

I'm wondering if its my watch data install as I did a selective install to maintain Health Data when I upgraded my phone. Its the only 'non-App store' thing Ive ever done.

Next try is wipe of phone, fresh start, not from backup. My other thought is if movies are causing a prob, could it be Live Photos that are choking it? I cannot select any photo/movie to import selectively to test this, but with a wiped phone I will try various things and report.

I tried a Reset All Settings on my phone to try to avoid a total wipe and still the same result -9905 error in image Capture (though thumbnails appeared) and Photos (no thumbnails, first white boxes, then beige placeholders)

I plugged the phone in again, closed Photos as it automatically opens, and tried to import to Lightroom. All the thumbnails for jpeg, movie and TIFF showed up, in 45 sec, thumbnails went blank and "Preview not available" was displayed and then the phone disconnected itself on its own, again.

I have solved this for me.

Bit the bullet and wiped the phone, added apps, tested, and photos synced. Bit by bit, add, test, got almost everything back to the way it was, added the watch, test. Only a couple more things to update - the only thing I lost completely was all of my health and exercise data, as Apple hasn't released a way to carry that over yet on a wipe.

I'm thinking of trying to salvage the data from my backup, but don't relish losing another day to reinstalling apps and accounts.

Good Luck!

To carry over your health data, you must use encrypted backup or backup using iCloud.

Back up your health data

You can save the data stored in your Health app by backing up your iOS device using iCloud. Your data gets encrypted as it goes between iCloud and your device, and while it's stored in iCloud.

If you aren't using iCloud, you can back up your Health data by encrypting your iTunes backup.

to imobl:

The problem with this simplistic solution is that you must use a BACKUP of your phone to carry the health data forward. Its all or nothing with health data unless you read/do this:

http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/09/26/how-to-only-transfer-activity-and-health -app-data-to-a-new-iphone/

I always set up my phones as new so I don't carry forward any problems hidden in a backup- obviously, there was something in my phone that caused the photos not to sync. Had I 'restored from a backup' as you suggest, I would be no further ahead as all the settings etc would have transferred back.

Wiping solved it. I don't know why, it just did, as I didn't wish to dedicate any more hours to finding the exact problem. I spent less time setting up the phone than two more days installing OS's, finding files, resetting and restarting. It's done.

I wasn't thrilled with the thought of wiping either, as you can see I tried everything I could to avoid it....I even mulled wiping & reinstalling OSX, but decided the phone was a better place to start.

I am appreciating that my phone is much quicker now and happy I did it for a variety or other reasons, but mostly because now I can selectively sync photos on and off, something I haven't been able to do since Sept as I didn't want to activate Photo sync in iTunes to wipe the existing photos I had in old iPhoto Events.

Sure, I sacrificed some of my health data, but some was retained by 3rd party apps and repopulated when I signed back into the accounts.

As for paying 'good money', roofs leak, basements flood, cars breakdown....dollar for dollar, hour for hour I spend less time in tech support than with the other OS's I abandoned than with OSX/iOS so I think I'm ahead overall, and appreciate that most of the time it does 'just work' given what I throw at it daily.

Good Luck!

Yep, wiping and not restoring from back up worked for me too. Took a few hours, but it works again!
True, I think I'm ahead too since switching to OSX/iOS... just frustrating when it goes wrong (of course) in the middle of a really busy week!

Anyway, all is right in my device world now... thanks for the advice (even if I didn't really want to hear it 😀 )

Had same problem this morning, with ImageCaptureCore error -9905 when trying to upload photos from iPhone 6 Plus IOS 9.2.1 to MacBook Pro, El Capitan 10.11.3

SOLVED by emailing a couple of the new photos (which were not being recognised) to myself then deleting them from camera roll on iPhone.

Subsequent attempts to upload to Photos were successful and all back to normal.
