Q: El Capitan Mail flashing problem

I just upgraded to El Capitan and tried to compose a message in Mail. After I clicked Send, the Compose window started flashing. I closed the program and relaunched, but the problem persisted. I finally managed to delete the email from my Outbox in between flashes (wasn't easy). I tried to compose another email, but the same issue occurred. Is this a bug? This makes Mail unusable.

A little painful, but ignoring the flashing, open the Outbox, click and hold the offending email, flashing continues, drag email to another mailbox (you can retrieve it later),  flashing continues, when you see the second mailbox highlight hold for a second and after the next flash, release.

As soon as there is no email in the Outbox it stops flashing.

Might as well fix the parameters in the Advanced Mail settings.   Even if Apple fixes it in some el Capitan point release, your mailbox won't be able to retrieve the old parameters.

Possibility?  Someone can figure out where in a TimeMachine Backup those parameters are stored, probably ~/Library/Mail/V3/  and retrieve them... but its not that hard to reset, once the flashing stops.

Have you tested in a new User? This will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

V3 is new to El Capitan. Previously Mail stored your data in V2 folder.

I managed to delete the offending email by clicking on its title, once my Outbox reappeared (it had temporarily vanished.) Once the flashing stopped, I was able to fix my SMTP settings and recreate my missing (main!) email account. Looks like all's good now. Thanks for your help!

I can't even get the flashing to stop!

Nor does there seem to be an outbox. What a fricking pain this is. I wish the eggheads at Apple would actually test these things before dumping a world of irritation on their customers.

Any hints on how to stop the &^$#%$ flashing, so I can maybe could fix the mail problem and use my Mac today?

I was able to get the outbox to reappear by 1) Force quitting Mail, and 2) Relaunching while holding down the shift key. Once the outbox appeared, I could click on it, select the offending message, and hit delete.

    Hope this helps.

My problem is an even worse one. I cannot even edit the list of SMTP servers. The option to edit the list does not show up on the Mail program. Anyone has any ideas about this?

    Hello,

after upgrading to El Capitan, I confirm that "Edit the smtp server list" is missing, and there are problems with setting the smtp. In fact, selecting one Outgoing Mail Server from one mail account, all the others change to the same Outgoing Mail server !! How can we fix it ? Thanks.

All my outgoing mail (multiple accounts) Can't send emails it keeps asking for mail server and then password.  After checking and replace password it still won't send and the messages still keep popping up.

All my accounts work fine from my iphone 6.

Actually, I got a hold to an Apple Mail Tech and was able to fix the problem.  Seems that somehow, email in El Cap deleted my password in SMTP.  Once we got it saved, my email now seems to work great.

I too had the same mail flashing problem after upgrading to El Captain. Mail app flashes while trying to compose an email. The problem is with the SMTP settings which seem to have screwed by the upgrade. To fix it disable WIFI on your mac . This will prevent your mail app from flashing. Then go to Mail preferences and correct the SMTP settings. I noticed that the smtp authentication method and SSL port settings have changed after the upgrade. Correct them based on your mail server settings. I have yahoo small business mail, icloud and gmail in my mail application. All of them were impacted. After correcting the settings everything got resolved.Hope this helps.
