I also have a MBP (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) and the list to see all of the messages are not there either. In fact, I can't even make the Messages app "half" of the screen with most other apps (namely Spotify).
BUT, when I move those two apps over to my 22" or 30" monitors, both apps take up half of the screen (and I'm able to adjust the width of both).
My guess is the design dept. at Apple either wanted to use one of the new and shiny gold Macbooks, or the difference of the default Late 2013 MBP's aspect ratio of 16:9 makes that much of a difference from the new Macbook's 16:10 ratio.
If you adjust your scaled resolution (I changed mine from default to the right most "More Space" option), I was then able to get the desired effect.
These may help
