no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

I just installed El Capitan and the first thing that I have noticed is that the normal sounds that apple mail puts out do not come out of the speakers. iTunes works fine but not then mail sounds. Any help would be appreciated

An old thread but my input may still be helpful to some people since this worked for me today. I have El Capitan 10.11.6. After trying all of the usual things suggested, I noticed in System Preferences, Sound, where it says, "Play sound effects through:", that pull-down selector just said "Selected sound output device". I clicked on it and changed it to "Internal Speakers" and my incoming Mail sound now works again.

I checked all my settings in Mail Preferences. I am getting the sent mail swoosh but not the new mail sounds. When I change the New Mail sound in the preference pane I do here the sound play but it does not play when new mail actually comes in. Everything else seems to be working so I am unsure how to proceed.

Hi plind,

Thanks for that additional information. The next option I'd like you to check is "Play user interface sound effects." This option should be checked, and it's located in System Preferences > Sound, under the Sound Effects tab. If it is checked there, then I next suggest booting your Mac into safe mode, and seeing if the issue persists. Please report back with your findings!

  1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

  2. After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.

You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac again, but don’t hold down any keys during startup.

OS X Yosemite: Start up in safe mode - Even Though this says Yosemite, the same applies to El Capitan.

Cheers.

I have the same issue, Mail seems to function fine otherwise but I get no sound for arriving mail in "Inbox" or the sound when I click "Get Mail" to force a check - I do get the "Whoosh" on sending though.

Tried booting into Safe Mode and back, no luck - unchecked the sound options in Mail Preferences, deleted custom sound file from Sounds Folder then reversed process, no luck. Do Not Disturb is not set.

This and the fact I lost my Scanner are the only two issues - resolved scanner by deleting/resetting printers, reinstalled both Apples and Printer manufactures software and re Added Printer under Printers & Scanners Pref pane.

Will watch this thread to see if anyone comes up with a fix.
