Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

MY BTYayoo email goes to Outlook and then to Apple mail. All was working fine until I installed El Capitano. Outlook crashed when it tried to retreive mail and Apple mail says login failure in top right corner so the mail boxes are empty then after a few days Outlook suddenly started working but Apple Mail is the same. I cannot try unticking Automatically detect and maintain account because it's not in bold so I can't touch it plus some other lines also not in bold. It says outgoing BTinternet server offline. My iPad and iPhone email is fine so something has happened after instal although the strange part is I managed to get my wife's email going by entering passwords etc in Apple mail accounts bit but when I do that for myself it just says account already exists !! Btw I'm no computer expert and friends that are IT consultants are struggling to come up with the answer !!

That error message has nothing to do with OS X or Apple Mail, or anything Apple at all from what I can see. As it says in the message, your email is being rejected by the server for virus or spam content. It also says you should contact your email provider, which is exactly what you should do. They can examine the email and let you know why it's being caught in their spam filter.

Dude, really not that big of a deal. Delete your accounts and add them anew.  Shame on you for not reading documentation.  I had this problem as well, 1 simple google search and 5 minutes later all of my mail woes were over.

Delete your accounts.  Add them back, problem solved.  The tough part is that they made it a little bit more difficult to find the advanced screen.  Please note that if you have non standard port numbers, you will need to change your IMAP and SMTP ports to equal that of your provider and toggle SSL depending on the type of connection your provider allows.  You went through this same procedure when you first set up your computer - a new version of the OS that had as many changes as this one requires the same amount of set up.  But honestly it's SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPER easy.

Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts -> Advanced  will only allow you to edit the IMAP server.

If you want to change your SMTP settings, under the Accounts header, select the SMTP server and then edit server list, which will allow you advanced editing of the server settings.

It's really simple - I was like you and frustrated until I googled the solution, which is to remove and edit the accounts.

Sadly, one solution doesn't fit all issues that El Capitan has created.

I deleted my POP account and now I am unable to enter it anew.

I have had it confirmed by my ISP provider that the information I'm enetring is correct and they have refrred me back to Apple but it was Apple who asked me to check with my ISP provider, when they were unable to correct the problem online.

All I want to do is to get my email to my iMac from the mail webserver but what used to work doesn't since the installation of El Capitan.

If there were a simple solution to the myriad of issues created not just to mail but to a whole host of services since El Capitan, then Apple would have either released a statement informing people how to correct the issue, or they would have released a patch via an upgrade to correct the issues that have been caused by the new OS.

They have, so far, done neither.

Forum contributors are to be applauded for their constant attempts to have these issues resolved and sharing these with others in the hope of of correcting those issues and some have been blessed with resolving those issues but others, like me, are still left in limbo.

To issue a statement of how to correct the issue would place them in the position of admitting that they have created a problem in the first place and their arrogance prevents them from doing this.

I am a big Apple devotee and am disaapointed by their default defence, when anything goes wrong they buy time by passing the blame to others, when they know the issue is of their making.

When Apple get things right it is impressive but this also applies when they get things wrong, they too are on an impressive scale as the El Capitan forums confirm.

I, simply, want to be able to have my mail delivered to my iMac as it used to be pre-El Capitan.

I live in hope that one day this will happen.

Don't know if my problem is related but I do have problems with mail and I'm getting very frustrated.

I have had emails on my MacBook Pro read them and then find I can't find them - not in trash, just not there!! Searches reveal nothing but then I look on my iPhone and there they are!! Why? Beginning to loose faith rapidly, it's not just this but there seem to be a lot of other issues both with the Mac and with iOS 9. Apple keeps telling us how good all they have is and then clearly demonstrate that it's not - why do that, with all that money why don't they just get it right before they issue new things?

Just a reflection of today's world - it's all getting so complicated that no one knows what's going on any longer.

Apple has seeded OSX 10.11.1 beta to developers and public beta testers, bringing with it stability, compatibility and security enhancements. They will, hopefully, put in a Mail upgrade, so it works, but they won’t say there is a fault, or the world be open to all kinds of legal stuff!

It can be very frustrating.  I have found that not all port/SSL combination are equal.  For instance, I have one provider who has 5 or 6 different ports they will allow for IMAP and POP, but not all of them can have SSL enabled.  I hate to say a platitude like "try different things," but it might come down to a process of trial and error.  The other possibility is that there might be a non-standard port that was created when your server was created initially.

the only reason why I push back to your situation is that many people have all expressed the same problem and overcame it simply and easily by creating their mail accounts.  Trust me as a MSFT faithful, I would love nothing more than the issue to be "Apple ***..."

I'm experiencing the problems you describe but the fixes did not work for me, fortunately my emails are personal one so there is not too much at risk as I have other devices where they are working properly, I guess at this point I have to wait for Apple to send update fixes.

Well, I have now been using this for just over a week and although I overcame the problems with it crashing on start up by turning off all accounts and enabling them again one by one, I must admit that I am very frustrated with this program.

In all the years I have had my Mac mail has just worked, smoothly, quickly and intuitively, but now there are so many problems in this Mail version I am seriously considering going over to use Chrome and web based email.

When I send a mail it does't go for anything up to 10 minutes and sometimes not then.

Received mail arrives with the headers but doesn't load the message for several minutes afterwards.

My Flagged messages were missing, which I thought I had overcame by deleting the library files and forcing a rebuild, but they still keep disappearing. One minute they will be there and next time I want them they've all gone. This isn't my ISP or gmail, this is something in the workings of the new mail.

It is just so clunky and slow its become a liability.

iPhone and iPad still work fine thank goodness but I cannot understand how Apple have allowed this programme to be released when it behaves this badly.

If you backed up your files, there are a number of threads about reverting to Yosemite and I recommend that you do.  what is interesting is that this problem seems to not be the same or manifest itself the same to all users.  My Gmail was unaffected (all 6 accounts), my rack space PoP mail was fine, but my 3rd party IMAP email was effected.  When I searched and found the Apple thread - remove and re-add, my problem wasn't instantly fixed.  I had to remap my SMTP server and edit the list to remove any of the old ones and add the ones I replaced.  Also, while editing the SMTP servers, my provider uses non-default ports, so all of that had to be updated as well.

Maybe I have been asking the wrong questions or providing the wrong assistance... When you say "mail isn't working..." what is it that's not working?  Is there an error?  Can you go to an Apple Store and have them reload either El Capitan or Yosemite?
