Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

There's definitely something very wrong with El Capitano which seems to be corrupting email account passwords. I thought I'd solved my problems using connection doctor on my iMac but the problem resurfaced this morning and I had to do it again. At the same time I lost my mail on my iPad out of the blue which packed up as I was deleting mail. It suddenly stopped picking up mail like my iMac did and the boxes went blank. Fortunately I've solved this too simply by deleting the account on my iPad and reinstalling. But you shouldnt have all this hassle because of a so called upgrade to your operating system and it remains to be seen if my email problems are over !! I appreciate what others are saying that it's not an Apple problem etc but I had no problems at all with my email on iMac, iPad or iPhone until I installed El Capitano. Coincidence ? I don't think so..

I haven't had any issue with my iPhone or my iPad, it's definitely and Apple/El Capitan issue

Does anyone else have an issue with the unread number of emails not chasing even when you have read them?  I also have issues with the little "read" dot reappearing on a previously read email.

I found a solution to my own email troubles after the upgrade.

For some reason El Capitan, after the upgrade, had checked the "Use SSL" in the Advanced tab of the Accounts tab of the Mail Preferences.

Unchecking "Use SSL", which is the way it should have been, and how it was when it was working fine in Yosemite, and saving the changes after quitting Mail, and restarting Mail, fixed the problems.

(The way I upgraded by the way was to do a clean install, after cloning my Yosemite boot drive with Carbon Copy Cloner, and then used Apple's migration utility to transfer my settings, apps, users, and files.

It hung half way through the first time I tried it, but second time it worked fine. I found after comparing the performance of a clean install of Mavericks and Yosemite versus the upgraded performance, that it is worth doing a clean install rather than an in place upgrade.)

    Solved...
When adding your email address and password into 'accounts', if may not have copied the email address across to Mail...
    So, Mail Preferences>Accounts>...
Get into the Outgoing SMTP Setting dropdown, and edit these settings, get to the tab where it has your email address and password... and enter it again!

So, has anyone braved the 11.11.1 update?  It was released this morning. Let us know if that fixes any of these issues... Thanks. I stepped back to Yosemite, and really cannot up to El Cap until there is a verified fix.  Appreciate the input.

    Has it been released?

I'm not aware of an update being made available..

I, for one, will happily update in the hope that it resolves the mail issue I have had since 'upgrading' to El Capitan.

I do have the same problems with some emails that I can't figure it out.

Both emails are with an hosting provider of my website and it seems there is a problem or with connecting with their servers or it asks me the password again and again.

I was able to fix one of the two but the other one is not working, same servers, same ports, even same password!

I changed the ports and nothing, I've deleted the smtp servers and recreated them and nothing.

I tried the aliases fix and now they both don't work again. I tried the check and uncheck tick bla bla but nothing!

What it's weird is that I tried Airmail Beta and it's not working there either. So the problem is somewhere else inside El Capitan, or the Libraries, I don't know.

With Airmail it's not able to find the servers, or password problems, same stuff more or less. I have to check my emails using the iPhone and going to the hosting provider to answer. It's a wasting of time trying to fix this, I lost my hope!

Yes 10.11.1 has been released.... I am downloading it right now.....It is huge...1.34GB.  I did a back up just before just in case.

I have only IMAP mail accounts so I have not experienced all of the problems that appear in this post and my mail is working very good now.

Only two fixes to restore my mail ..1 find the hide and seek (show) button, 2 sign out of iCloud in system preferences and then sign back in.

I hope this update fixes all your problems and does not screw up mine.

    maryde -

Take a close look in the Accounts preference in Apple Mail. My Earthlink POP account was somehow converted to an Earthlink IMAP account after the upgrade. I needed to reconfigure the account settings before I could get it to work

Thank you, dguliano. I solved my problem with mail after giving myself a rest and time to rethink. I created a new Earthlink email address with the same name as the old one. All my mail came flooding in. Then I made the old address address inactive. All has been well since. I do have my doubts about downloading the new patch 10.11.1 from the App Store, though.

Don't be afraid to install 10.11.1    I was, but all went well for me.  Mail seems OK now and faster.  I find El Capitan to be very fast.  Too bad that it is not compatible with some 3rd party software.   Remember how you fixed your mail just incase.  I made a fresh backup and was prepared to wipe my hard drive and reinstall in case the update messed up my mail. be safe always.  10.11.1 seems to have fixed the usb and external drive problems also.
