Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

In what aspect do you find El Capitan to be faster?

El Capitan is faster in loading web pages, opening apps; photos especially, faster start up.  I have a fusion drive and only after a clean install did I notice an improvement in speed. The update from 10.10.5 was a real thriller with the mail problems.  The only bug I can still find is the failure to eject  the external hard drive after the first Time Machine back up.  If I restart, then the disk will eject normally, however the external disk icon turns orange instead of green and remains orange after incremental are complete, it use to turn green after it finished and I miss that.  The back ups are valid and usable.

Mine crashes on startup, no chance to delete accounts, or change the settings.  Oddly the App store account is crashing also. On a Mac Pro, hardwired.

Have you tried going into system preferences and signing out of iCloud, quitting sys pref., going back into and signing into iCloud?

Crossed my fingers and rebooted and now Mail, App Store and Photo are working with no other changes.  All archieved mail is there and pulling from all three accounts. Heavy sigh of relief!

Pleased to see so many people have been able to resolve their mail issues.

    Unfortunately, not in my case.

I'm still getting the same message 'Unable to verify account name or password'.

Thankfully, I can still receive the mail on iPhone and iPad. So I suspect that deep within El Capitan there is a deep rooted issue.

It seems all the email problems have mainly been caused by corrupted passwords but not all. I've downloaded the latest patch and it didn't screw up what I've already fixed so fingers crossed. So to summarise I used connection doctor on my iMac to solve that email issue and then checked and typed in again the email for incoming, outgoing...basically whatever needed a password. For iPad and iphone i deleted the accounts then put them back in again then went through the same process with the passwords. I did find initially I couldn't send mail but doing the same things again did the trick. I hope this helps but seems everyone has different problems. Message to Apple...stop using Joe Public as a testing ground for your software and make sure the bloody things work properly before you roll them out !!!

Well I received excellent support from Apple but after wasting a good 6 hours on the phone, the MacBook was rendered useless. It has since gone back and had a new hard disk fitted and loaded back with Yosemite. Obviously, I can't run a business in the couple of weeks this took and so I have bought I new iMac and sold on the repaired MacBook.

I have to say though that Im extremely disappointed that Apple would release an OS without properly testing it; I expect a lot more, which is why I use Apple and not MS but this experience has made me wonder..

I have today loaded both my 2009 white Macbook & my 2011 i-Mac with the El Cap 10.11.1 update received today, 23 Oct 15.

    No apparent problems.

I loaded the upgrade, no difference, apart from all my mail that I had in my inbox, vanished. There were a lot of them and I didn’t want to lose them! All the ones in other mailboxes are still there, but not the inbox and I can’t seem to get them despite having archived them.

The only issue I had after updating to El Cpitan was with iCloud mail making me log in to mail on every boot up. The fix is to reset / zap your pram, hold down command option p and r buttons all at the same time after immediately the boot chime and wait for the next chime then let go of the keys. This might solve your mail issues and maybe it won't, it fixed my iCloud account and for me El Cpitan has been great otherwise, faster boot times and many other issues I had in Yosemite are fixed like etter Bluetooth pairing, faster boot time, faster finder graphics. I have six mail accounts all on different servers and providers all working just fine on all my devices. I would also update to the latest iOS if you update to 10.11.

Think the issue has to do with keychain but not sure.

I also found that the upgrade had checked "use SSL" on my gmail pop account.  After unchecking I was able to send mail, and things are now OK. Thanks for the tip.
