Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

Maybe for you. For me, not so much. Have not been able to send mail on apple mail since "upgrading" to El C.  No error message.  Just straight to my outbox. I can send mail through my optomnline webmail. Just gonna do that and stop worrying until apple provides the fix.  Anything Elsie toomtimemconsuming. Bill

    This works

Go to the failing Go Daddy mail account in Accounts

    Go to the advanced tab

You can also get here from Connection Doctor by clicking on the log entry that failed.

    1) Uncheck Automatically detect and maintain account settings
    2) Check Allow insecure authentication

I cannot find this solution anywhere else but it works perfectly and immediately

Automatically detect and maintain account settings  - it's greyed out on my system and I can't figure out how to unlock it. Any ideas??

Oh my, I had faith and tried it again. Still a failure on the mac account. It actually detected my other two IMAP accounts and they are working.

However the mac account is still inactive and will not activate.

I can click on the buttons in the internet accounts but when I go back, they are all unchecked again. In iCloud preferences nothing can be clicked on. When I put a checkmark it will uncheck again.

My wife’s mac account is working fine, I noticed however that this is were possibly the problem lies. I changed the picture in my account. It actually let me do that and the picture showed up in my wife’s account. Some crossover mumbo jumbo.

I am letting the iMac run like this for a week or so and see if there will be a fix. I have two years of sales in my mac mail folder. All still there if I go to iCloud on the web or on my lap top or iPhone.

Still waiting on a fix. Holding off on reverting back to Yosemite. That would be another couple of hours again.

    It should't be

Start with connection doctor in Window on Mail

Click on any red flags connection that is not working.

That should give you the access you need.   BTW  This was a solution for Go Daddy email.

After upgrading to El Capitain I was having the same problems... could not get mail from a GoDaddy account.

Found a fix that worked for me.

Goto mail, launch Mail Preferences and select the account in the Accounts tab, then click on the ‘Advanced’ tab.

    • Look at the list and at the top of the list you’ll see the ‘Automatically detect and maintain account settings’ tick box.
    • If it is selected, deselect it, close mail then reopen Mail.  All working fine now for me.

Great article, but does not work with iCloud or Apple mail. When boxes are clicked on the unselect by them self.

Also iCloud account cannot be deleted. See error message.

I found a work around, by creating another user on my 27 inch iMac with my mac id. everything in the mail works there.

After that I was able to manually insert my mac mail as 'Add Other Account' in my old user account. However now I have two inactive iCloud mail accounts on that user side. Go figure. I might move everything into the new user account.accounts.png

    Same problem..

    With no success in Fixing..

Upgraded to El Capitan and cannot send or receive any emails at all.

Ive tried what has been suggested here with no luck.

    Any guidance I would appreciate.

Ive been told by a mac store that I would have to wait for an update to fix this..

    Is that right.

    Kind Regards

    John

I have been fighting this issue for a long time and the "Automatically Detect Settings" did the trick.  TURN IT OFF!!!

To Apple, they should review deeply this application it is the worst ever, Steve Jobs would have fired all the people in charge of this application, it is a complete disaster, creates several folders for sent, sent messages, etc, and erase mails. It does not nor wrote POP, with IMAP it is also a disaster, only works with Gmail, but not with companies or other mail programs different than Gmail. We need to complain Apple for this mess. TKS
