Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

I recently bought a refurbished macbook air and after the first update I had horrendous problems with mail.  I couldn't connect and eventually I didn't get any mail in one of my accounts.  I finally gave up and like you I restored to before the install and all is working now.

I had issues upgrading from my old mac to my new mac. I could import my "Inbox" and "sent" files just fine but any of my files under "On My Mac" would not import if they were in a sub-directory.

After many hours, I finally figured it out.

    On your old system:

Select any folder with a sub-directory.

Hold down the option key and click down arrow. This will open all sub folders.

Select the main folder (hold the shift key) and also select all of it's sub folders.

Right click on the main folder and Export Mailbox. This will export everything inside the main folder.

    Why this works:

The folders need to be opened for the content inside to be exported. (D'oh! Moment.)

    On your new system:

    Import the files. It works....

This version of Mail is buggy as he$$! The last few upgrades worked well but it appears that I'm heading back to Thunderbird or similar. Doesn't appear there are any answers to the numerous issue like, random crashes, doesn't download latest email, message disappear from my inbox but if I close mail and reopen they are there, closes emails that I'm currently reading for no apparent reason. Hard to run a biz with such an unreliable mail program. What a freaking joke. BTW, this is a fresh new install of OS on this machine.

It has cost me but I finally returned the refurb and bought a new macbook air with what I want in it.  I definitely am NOT  going back to microsoft.

    Wish me freedom from bugs!

Well, fed up with Mail once again and I'm done. Switched the Postbox this morning and it works great so far. I can have the two open at the same time and you can see how bad Mail really is. Mail won't get new mail and or new mail mysteriously disappears from my inbox. I have to close and reopen to get Mail to update properly (BTW, if you use the basic POP settings it works fine since its easy. When you use IMAP thats when Mail fails big time). Shouldn't have to close and open a program to use it. Bye bye Mail once again and I hope Apples pulls their you know what out and corrects this buggy OS.

    Apple, we have a problem!

This has been going on long enough, with all the resources at your finger tips, please sort Mail out 'definitively' in your next El Capitain fix.  Of all the software to screw up!!... It has cost me - as it has many others - hours and days of frustration, deleting and re-creating accounts, lost productivity and, yes as a result money!

Having had to resort to accessing my iCloud via a browser during the last few weeks, I have at least found a working solution, for the time being (maybe longer?!)  I'm trialing the latest AirMail beta, which fingers crossed, seems to be running smoothly.

You are not talking to Apple, just other users like yourself.

Make sure that you delete all of your outgoing SMTP settings before you delete your last account. Deleting accounts don't remove those settings, they are retained. So, if they are set incorrectly, you won't eliminate the issue.

Just hoping the in the midst of it all someone at Apple might take the time to watch these forums and take note of us, the users and the issues that they need to address.  As I said for any users who need a fix, AirMail seems to be a working solution for me, others have mentioned Postbox.

Its only users here but hopefully there's an Apple employee that trolls around these forums. It is pretty sad that all these smaller companies can develop a better and more reliable mail program than Apple. Apples mail program seems to be designed for the retired, part time, non business related POP account user. Once you bring in IMAP accounts its a useless program.

Well, despite your issues, millions are having no issues at all.

Lanny, I understand your comments and agree to a point. But based on simple Google searches this is a much bigger issue that we all think. Maybe not millions but I'd say its a big deal.

BTW, the last time I had this problem before they issued a fix to Yosemite they were blaming the provider and the provider was blaming Apple. Good problem solving technique there. I'd go out of business if I ran that way.

Lanny, You are missing the point.  This "new and improved"el Capitan is an epic fail for way too many users.  Depending on which mail server you use it either works or it does not.  You are lucky, perhaps next time it will be you and once you go through this hassle you too may be singing a different tune.  Thousands of work hours have been wasted because of this failure and Apples failure to create a fix.  Issues with bugs for the iPhone 6 update as well.   Apples updates and improvements have too many bugs and they need to get their act together.

A mess, overloaded the system from my AOL files. When I open mail everything crashed. Although improved it eats a lot of RAM
