Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

Same here.  Tried several of the fixes above and no go.  Both Mail accounts that I am having trouble with are MS accounts.  One is an Exchange account (work) the other is a Hotmail account (Personal).  Anyway, I have shut down Mail and will be using the web based versions for both these accounts until an update is available.  It was sad downloading the Outlook App and replacing the Mail App on my iPhone and iPad!

MAIL FIX WHEN DEALING PARTICULARLY WITH GOOGLE VS. MAIL SEND/ RECEIVE ISSUES

*This fix worked specifically when dealing with Google Email Accounts (Gmail or own domain), but principle may apply with other email clients (Yahoo etc). For some reason POP emails are having major issues, but IMAPs can be fixed.

Ok, so here is what worked for me. If send/receiving is causing you issues follow these steps:

    1. First, any important emails from your inbox you want to keep, create a folder in the Mail left hand pane (in right column under 'On My Mac' > right click to create folder), and move any emails you don't want to be lost into this folder on 'On my Mac'. Moving your emails there should keep them safe, as deleting email accounts will delete your inbox data, unless they are stored on the Mac (in theory).

    2. Next, goto Mac settings > Internet Accounts and delete all your email accounts (Note - this will delete all inbox data - hence why step 1 important).

    3. Now in Mac Mail, goto Preferences > Accounts. Click the plus to add new account. Re-add all your email accounts.

    This is one simple fix.

Even before doing this you can try:

    1. Goto Mail > Preferences > Advanced. In advanced make sure the box 'automatically detect and maintain account settings' is ticked.

This can be a quick fix for those using POP, but it would seem there is a code issue between Google servers / POP / Mail / El Caption, so may have to wait for the update before this is resolved. It would seem El Caption as screwed up backend settings of account data so deleting accounts and re-installing so to speak is one solution.

I was using POP (still trapped in the dark ages lol), but thanks to our jolly El Caption, who steers his ship about as good as Jack Sparrow, I have leaped into using IMAP.

Note - Might be wise to go into your email client settings (gmail or whatever) before doing this, and wherever the POP/IMAP settings are make sure your 'folder size limits' are set to a low number, like 1000 or 5000, as re-adding accounts often can cause the server, Gmail for example, to download 50,000 old emails. And if you have 5 business email accounts like me, have fun sorting them lol!

Come on Apple, after all of those reports of mail crashing, surely you've got to know this is a problem! How about giving us a fix for El Crapitan.

    DO NOT DOWNLOAD EL CRAPITAN!

I'm also having mail problems. I won't rehash it all but mostly my Internet IMAP accounts are affected. I also had the unexpected behavior of having two entire accounts simultaneously show up inside the trash. When I move an email on the account, it moves in the trash as well. I'm not emptying the trash and I won't be using Mail any more for a while. I hate the think I have to use Outlook on my MacBook.

Well Apple Friends you've heard the cry. Please fix your customers computer systems now... we love y-our products when they work!

I've downloaded El Capitan to both my 21" iMac (2011) and my 13" MacBook Air (2011). Had major issues with macbook book sorted them by changing email from pop to imap now receiving and sending emails fine, BUT the iMac is a completely different story changed all email accounts from pop to imap used exactly the same settings as the on the MacBook it will receive emails BUT not send them . As a result I'm reverting back to Yosemite from a time machine backup, its a mega ball ache as its taking my machine out of use for 3 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    PLEASE SORT THIS OUT APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had the same problem ! Went to "Application" >Utilities>Keychain and deleted all saved password from all my mail accounts.

Then deleted all Email accounts under "Preferences" of Mail using the  "-"  signe and re-created my email accounts there by using the

"+" sign, reentering the passwords. Everything works fine now ...

Bit of a hassle , but I think going to Keychain and deleting some old unused passwords and sites, helped the Mac run more smoothly

this got it working for me so far (I'm not so sure I should say this yet, but then again impatience is what got me in this pickle). I can send and receive ok, all emails seem to be there. Never upgrading so soon again... how did I forget this basic commandment? Do not be tempted by the apple!

I had the same problem.  This morning Apple Support (Europe) put me right.  Took 1hr 40 to achieve it.  Can't  praise James & Raivis enough.  My i-mac is well outside of warranty & service contract.

Crashing of mail after installing Capitan was caused by one of my two googlemail accounts.

You have to remove the gmail account & re-subscribe.  You won't lose earlier mail as it is recovered once you sign in again (with your original details).

The younger gmail account t wasn't involved.

No apparent fault with Hotmail & I-cloud mail.

I cannot believe the disregard Apple has for its loyal customers. Now it has become a custom to bring second rate upgrades that disrupt all the applications. I cannot sign in my e mail except for my icloud account and I have a lot of problems with mail.

My issue attire the ElCaptain update was lack of connectivity to my ISP  over two days the issue was resolved by deleting and replacing the email account.

Well, what seems to have worked for me was turning on "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" in the Advance mail settings of my primary mail account.  I had to turn it off for Yosemite.  This was an issue Apple had with Go Daddy (Media Temple) servers for some reason.  Seems to be working now after I reselected that option. Fingers crossed.

Crashing, showing "Unread" mail when there isn't any, and not accepting my outgoing mail servers anymore - these are just some of the many problems I've been having every time I use Mail now, since the upgrade to El Capitan.
