Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

Okay, I've searched all over and I don'y see where anyone else has a problem like this.

Upgraded (if that is what they call it, more like a down grade at this point) to El Crapitan and all is fine with my own user login. Through Mail App 9.0 I can get my Yahoo mail and my wifes Gmail without issue. When logged in to my wifes id or any other id, Mail App doesn't even allow me to set up mail for either Yahoo or Gmail. In either case going through the account set up basically halts after entering the email address and password then the app screen (mail. contacts, etc) Click to accept and  . . . .  nothing. I'm left with the Cancel button or nothing. Left it for several hours thinking it was 'thinking' and  . . .  nothing.

Very frustrating and very surprising. This is the first time an Apple update has ever done this stuff. I left Windows a few years back to come to Mac specifically because Windows kept doing similar crap. But now Apple seems to be serving up problems after upgrades as well.

It would be nice if Apple told us a fix was in the works for this and other El Crapitan issues but they rarely admit there is a problem until they send out a bug fix without admitting anything.

Folks, let me reiterate what a couple of posts have already said:

    CALL APPLE'S CUSTOMER SUPPORT.

It's free; I had a very short wait time. I was connected to a respectful and intelligent tech person who resolved my issues, revived the two mailboxes that were not working in El Capitan, explained what I could do if there were any further issues related to the accounts, and got everything working again.

Hooray! Top marks to Glen on the support team. Two days of pounding my desk and swearing, and it took probably 10 minutes on the phone to have my email back. Strongly recommend.

Check your preferences folder in ~/Library/Preferences. Do you have a com.apple.mail preference file?

If so, check if you also have a second preferences folder called preferences0

Jake11, I have neither a " com.apple.mail preference" file nor a "preference0" folder in either my Library file or any other users Library file. I have no idea of the significance of these files.

I had exactly the same problem, but I managed to solve it by:

    1. Deactivating the troubled account ( Mail > Preferences > Account info > Enable this account)
    2. Quitting and restarting Mail
    3. Reactivating the account

    Hope this will help others!

I had a similar problem with Mail crashing during the upgrade. Restarted the Mac and then every time I opened Mail it would get as far as downloading new messages and then crash.

After trying several things I disabled WiFi, this allowed Mail to remain open.

Then I went into System Preferences, Internet Accounts and for each email account I untucked the boxes against everything (Mail, Contacts, Calendar etc), I also did the same for FaceBook and Twitter.

Then I turned on WiFi and restarted Mail.

OK thus far - no crashes with no accounts.

Now I turned on each account - 1 account at a time - to see what happened.

Each account loaded up in turn and all accounts are back on line and mail is working.

I can't say why it works but it does for me - maybe it will for you! Good Luck.

I had a similar experience with mail and the same solution worked for me (deactivating and reactivating the various accounts).  In my case not only was Mail not working properly but my Contacts was empty and there were several other issues, all related to iCloud services.  But everything is fixed now.

We have two Macbook Pros, and the upgrade to El Capitan only caused these problems on one of them.  The only difference between the two was this: at a certain point towards the end of the upgrade a window appears with the message that the iCloud account is being configured.  In the same window there is a button to click to move on (says "continue" or "next" or something - can't remember precisely).  This button is highlighted and live, even while the iCould configuration daisy wheel is still spinning, and it isn't clear whether you have to click it to complete the iCloud setup or wait until it's finished.  On the first machine I clicked it - and this is the machine that had the problems.  On the second machine, older and wiser by an hour, I waited and sure enough the iCloud configuration process completed itself, after which I clicked the "next" button.  On this second machine there were no issues whatsoever.  I wonder if others with similar problems were caught by the same trap - an underlying common thread seems to be an incomplete iCloud configuration on the upgraded computer.

I recalled I had enabled my Macbook's firewall just to test it, around the same time I installed El Capitan. Just as a test I disabled the firewall, and since that, my email has been working again. Does that even make sense?

After initially solving the problem by deactivating the account, it's come back. And this time, it won't work. Am at a loss... Apple should never have brought this on the market, as this was already an issue during alpha-testing. I'm looking into buying Outlook for Mac.

My problem was that on updating to El Capitan, none of my old incoming or sent mail came through.  Oh no!!!  But found this fix that worked perfectly:

Quit Mail, then go to your library folder [option-Go menu] and find the Mail folder.  In there, open the V3 folder, then the MailData folder.  Copy all that's inside to another folder just in case this doesn't work, then delete EVERYTHING but the "syncedrules.plist" file. Close all and open Mail.  A screen should then appear saying it's importing all mail messages.  Took about 5 minutes for me, but now all my old mail is back.  Hope this helps!

thank you for posting the procedure. Unfortunately it did not help. It seems that the problem is one or several messages in one of my mailboxes that cause mail to crash whenever it reads those messages. If I disable the account in question everything works fine. No idea how to resolve this issue...

after installing El Capitan my mail.app made big confusion. i still received mails. but i couldn't send mails.

controlling my accounts: all acounts were different from yosemite. every POPaccount was doubled as IMAP., but all are inactive. i couldnt change the name of POPserver.  the names of SMTPserver were deleted. i couldn't write new. including "show SMTPserverlist" disappeared. a lot of hours are gone, no solution. including: now the preference «~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist» no longer exists. there is a new one called V3???

on the same machine with an other user, mail goes perfectly.

a new start don't change the problems.

access rights i can no longer repair, el capitan is doing it automaticla, apple says...

I came across this once a long time ago at one of my clients, took me ages to figure out. In this case, it ended up being corrupt or incompatible icons (photos) in Address Book cards (AB is now called Contacts). When Mail tries to access these particular messages, it also tried to load the associated contact file and this crashed Mail. Took hours of scanning logs to figure it out.

It might not be this particular bug in your case, but it would be worth looking at any associated files that may be getting accessed or loaded when these particular messages are being read.
