Mar 4, 2016 11:54 PM in response to David Itkinby MacTitan,Felt I'd waited long enough for El Capitan to mature, so I finally used the arrival of a second, brand new Mac to update,
making my computers "in sync" as far as OS is concerned.
The result?
I've been trying for a literal WEEK now to get my mail to work.
I've mostly got POP accounts, and that's the way I like it - I've got a massive mail folder that was 13 GB under Yosemite.
The local folders in Mail was a carefully crafted hierarchy backed by a lot of filter rules.
But now, I CAN'T get my local folders to show.
Mail converted my Mail-folder, making it twice the size - but NO local folders show. That's where ALL my received mail is. From years back. I don't keep mail in the inbox, I sort it upon arrival.
Here's what I've tried so far:
- Multiple conversions. Going back to backups after each try. Takes a lot of time to chug several hundred thousand files around.
- Manual imports into a blank Mail folder (starting from scratch). The mails get imported, eventually - but they're shown buried in never-ending levels of folders, and worst of all - when I try to move them OUT of that position, I get an error saying the .mbox file doesn't exist, so the messages can't be moved. Tried this 3 times. The time it takes for ONE single attempt at importing everything, exceeds 12 hours. Even on a brand spanking new MacBook Pro. Even when no mechanical harddisk is involved.
- Tried turning mail accounts OFF and then ON. The only thing that happens, is that the corresponding inbox gets turned off and on again. No local folders show.
- Tried rebuilding mailboxes in Mail after one of those manual imports. No change to structure. This is also somewhat impossible to do in the cases where NO folders show to selected and rebuilt in the first place.
- Reindexing the entire drive - even forcing it through manual use of mdutil - just to make sure it did what I wanted it to do. No change. No folders appear.
The interesting part is, that the folders DO pop into existence in Mail whenever I pull down new messages, and a filter kicks in, putting the message into one of my folders. But the new message is the ONLY thing it shows in that folder, and any neighboring folders in the tree structure still remain invisible.
Even if I this very moment change over to IMAP completely, it doesn't change the fact that I've got YEARS of e-mail in my local folders.
I have NO confidence in any Apple support person being able to help me over phone - because this is a bug in the OS - not some "you're doing it wrong" routine.
Dear Apple - would you please stop fussing over shades of pink for a few hours, and FIX THIS PROGRAM?
I can't start using Mail in El Capitan before this is fixed - I need to access mail received just before the update.
I don't think it's too much to ask to be able to keep my old e-mails.
