Q: Does MS Office 2008 work with El Capitan?

Is there anyone here that have used MS Office 2008 with El Capitan and can inform me if it works or not? Word and Excel works fine with Yosemite and I do not want to upgrade to El Capitan if Office 2008 if it does not work. Thank you.

Use LibreOffice, it's free, and well supported.

The person wasn't asking about an alternate to MS Office 2008 for Mac.  Please stay on-topic.

**** I guess one question I want to ask is, did anyone do a CLEAN install for Mac OS X 10.11, then try to install Office 2008 w/latest update for Office 2008? ****

It may be that the first "dot release" will fix some of these problems.

What on earth does it have to do with you what I suggest, you who offer no alternative but to wait and hope?

He/she wasn't asking for "alternatives" - they are asking about MS Office - a product for good or ill with the largest footprint in the real world.

Little niche developer-hobbies like NeoOffice, OpenOffice, or Libre aren't ever going to amount to anything, except a few specialists.  They are dead-ends, practically.

Threads meandering all over the place are not helpful to a person asking a specific question.

Thanks for your opinion, I have filed it somewhere appropriate.

Now why don't you try to help the OP with the problem?

Very cute.  Not.  You won't be known for your wit.

The only people that can "help with the problem" are, besides Apple and Microsoft, are those who have Office 2008 (latest update revision) up and running on Mac OS X 10.11.  The person is asking about MS Office, not some little toy-niche program.

My question was, did anyone try a clean-install of 10.11 and then try installing Office 2008 on it?

I'm waiting for the first dot-release before doing anything with El Capitan.

A few hours and suddenly you're an expert.

Help the OP, I don't give a fig what you think.

    No it wasn't

FYI, LO's userbase (in 2013) was 75 million

How many people still use MS's obsolete and unsupported Office 2008?

Thank you for your suggestion. I won't use LO as I'm making do quite successfully with Pages/Numbers. Thanks anyway, it all helps!

Yup, Numbers is an OK substitute as long as you don't need VBA, and if you do then LO will provide it for you.

My use of Excel is relatively straightforward - I don't use VBA or complex macros. Hence Numbers seems to work OK with all my existing spreadsheets. I looked at LO and it looks impressive. In time I might just go there!

I make extensive use of VBA for automation and provision of features, so LO is a no-brainer. When I need the full power of Excel I use the Windows version which is still superior to the Mac one. Does having to export to an xls file get annoying instead of just saving in Excel format (save as)?

Yes it does - I've actually been saving spreadsheets as .numbers not .xls. Also having to use 'export' to create a sensible .pdf file is a little unusual.

That (along with no VBA) is what deterred me from using Numbers, I share spreadsheets with a number of users, everything can read Excel files, nothing but Numbers can read a Numbers file.
