Q: Does MS Office 2008 work with El Capitan?

Is there anyone here that have used MS Office 2008 with El Capitan and can inform me if it works or not? Word and Excel works fine with Yosemite and I do not want to upgrade to El Capitan if Office 2008 if it does not work. Thank you.

Thanks - I was not aware of that restriction as I'm new to numbers. From now on it will be export not save.

You're welcome, it's an annoying restriction, especially as Numbers clearly can write an Excel file correctly. Take a look at LO,it's very good, bandits very free so makes a useful extra tool to have in the box.

    I got it to work!!

My initial attempts to install Office Mac 2008 using the original CD/DVD I purchased at the Apple store were unsuccessful.  I tried everything I could find about it on the Web, in chatrooms, etc.

Here's what finally worked.  I used Apple's Migration Assistant to move my Applications from my old MacBook Air (which included Office Mac 2008 on Yosemite) to my new MacBook running El Capitan.

I hope this works for you.

The basic problem with analyzing, determining and providing a definitive answer to ones question (or questions) is that there are so many variables. #1 - The person asking the question doesn't explain in exact detail the circumstances or conditions under which they are trying to use (or Integrate)  an app.  #2 - is that many people providing answers overlook the simplest solutions and immediately delve into some "tech-o babble" basically trying to impress everyone with their so-called "high tech expertise".

For example (my situation).  I just bought a new iMac 27" Quad-Core and it came loaded with OS X 10.10 Yosemite. I had all my files, folders and yes, even my apps migrated from my old iMac (which was running OS X 10.6.8). Surprisingly MS Office 2008 ran perfectly on Yosemite - no major problems. So, as explained, this new iMac already has MS Office 2008 loaded (and running fine) on OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite.  Under the described conditions, my question (from someone who has the exact same situation), will (or should) MS Office 2008 (including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage) run fine (with no problems) if I would download and install OS X  10.11 (El Capitan)?

Of course, I have the same concerns concerning my Adobe CS4 Suite but that's another subject............

PS:  Actually this posting is not really "in answer" to Jam Palm's posting.............but I guess I am so stupid that I do not know how to create a "new" post in this thread. How does one do that???

My MS Office 2008 works with El Capitan but it working slow and wonky. But the most annoying glitch is the visuals. The image on the screen for documents in word or for Excel and Powerpoint is very fuzzy and out of focus...sort of like a soft focus on a camera. I have a mid 2015 new iMac with a 5K retina screen and this is a real pain to work with. Is anybody experiencing this problem and does anyone have a solution?

I am afraid not, Office 2008 was written long before 4K and 5K displays existed, MS are not going to add support for high resolution displays to a piece of software which was replaced a long time ago.

    Sorry.

Ugh.  Agreed - all I want is Office without all the bells and whistles. 2008 was a great version, but the original install DVD will not work on our new MBP. It fails just as it's about to install the software package - after agreeing to licensing, plugging in the MS Product Key...

Then what you probably want is LibreOffice. It's free, and well supported.

Paul:  If you have your old system backed up, you can use Migrate Assistant.  That's what worked for me.  I migrated my old office setup on Snow Leopard to my new El Capitan system.  Good luck.

Fortunately Migrating from my late 2006 iMac let my MS Office 2008 work mostly on my new to me Mini w/ 10.11.1.

    Zoom problem in Excel:

I am no longer able to enter a custom zoom level (like 115%) by highlight the zoom window in tool bar and entering my size. I am only able to use pre-selects in the drop down menu. Anyone notice this and have a work around or fix?

    Thanks, Dave

I'm sure your issue is long resolved, but in case others have a similar question: I changed to El Capitan last week and immediately began having problems with MS Word 2008 (frequently freezing and "not responding"). I called Microsoft Customer Service and they informed me that in fact they are not compatible, which explains the problem. So, according to MS, you'll have to upgrade your MS Office (i think to at least 2010 or newer) if you want to use El Capitan.

No, Office 2010 is a windows program, you would need to update to 2011 or later.

It works up to 10.11.5 but 10.11.6 breaks it.

I don't know of an easy downgrade.

Looks like a complete wipe and a reload of 10.11, and then only upgrading to 10.11.5.

    Yuck.

    Thanks, guys.

All Office apps are crashing with "Library not loaded:  /usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib"

That's an alias to libstdc++.6.0.9, which is different between my 10.11.5 system (where all works)

and my 10.11.6 system, where no Office apps work.

Have you got 10.5.6 Apple developer tools loaded on your machine?
That's another variable that might be affecting the dylib.

In any case, the situation is still bad.
