my ipod is stuck on the music/photos/video screen. can anybody cure?

Try a Reset.
To reset your Classic, turn the Hold witch on, then off again and press-and-hold the Select (centre) and Menu buttons for at least ten seconds. During that time the iPod should begin its restart procedure.
