I had apparently this same problem and stumbled on a solution that worked for me; hope it helps others.

Like jbiehler, Mail consistently crashed for me 15-45 seconds after launching it. (Using mail's Activity window revealed that Mail was still in the process of downloading messages when it would crash.) Also like him, the crash reports always showed that the crashed thread had something to do with "Attachment Manager." Per his suggestion, I tried re-installing El Capitan, but I didn't do a clean install. The problem persisted after reinstallation. Here's what worked for me:

Mail manages five email accounts for me - two Gmail, one iCloud, a Yahoo, and a personal domain. Of my total email, about 90% comes from one Gmail account, 5% from iCloud, and the remaining 5% from the other accounts. Because Gmail hasn't always played well with Mail in the past, I started by disabling the two Gmail accounts in System Preferences > Internet Accounts (i.e., I unchecked the "Mail" check box ). The crashing abruptly stopped. I turned on one of the two Gmail accounts - a backup account that I seldom use and that has very limited email history. Still no crashes. Finally, I re-enabled the second account - my main email address with thousands of messages and an extensive history - and let Mail catch up by downloading all the email I've missed in the days since this problem started for me (about three days). Voila - the crashing stopped, and Mail now functions normally for me with all five accounts enabled.

I don't have enough technical knowledge to be sure of what was behind the crashes, but given the reference to "attachment manager" and the fact that the crashing stopped when I disabled an email account that had hundreds - and probably thousands - of messages with attachments makes me think that might have been the source of the issue. Since the procedure that worked for me amounts to a slightly more sophisticated version of "try turning it off and turning it on again," I have no idea if it will help others, but it might be worth a shot. Good luck, all! 🙂

I confirm that disabling the google accounts, it does not crash anymore and it now downloads thousands of emails from the other accounts, which it should not have to do, since all accounts were up to date before the upgrade: "I started by disabling the two Gmail accounts in System Preferences > Internet Accounts (i.e., I unchecked the "Mail" check box ). The crashing abruptly stopped."

I then enable only one of the gmail account, and now it's downloading thousands of emails, without crashing so far.

Could it be a problem with having multiple gmail accounts trying to upload thousands of emails with attachments at once?

Hi,

I've resolved in this way:

first, switcched off all my accounts, just like cptcoe did;

then I've removed from my library all the Mail data (~/Library/Mail/V2) (of course for my safety, I have MOVED the folders in a safe place!)

Relaunched Mail: no accounts, all clean;

then turned on the accounts, one after another.

Mail begun to load and sync all the mailboxes.

Now it seems it's working.

Update:

I had re-enabled the 2 google accounts yesterday, and Mail did not crash.

But this morning, with a bunch of emails in the pipeline from both accounts, Mail crashed again, with same error message.

I disable one of the 2 google accounts, and it still crashes.

Will try disabling all and re-enabling all Google accounts, but this alone does not look like a long-term solution.

Update 2:

Yes, it works. After disabling all Google accounts, letting all other message downloads finish, then re-enabling a Google account at a time. It works and does not crash... If have to do that every time Mail is closed for a while: not a long term solution, but maybe able to live with it, until Apple fixes the problem.

I've tried de- and re-activating the accounts, and it helps for a few minutes, but Mail eventually crashes again, with:

"Terminating app due to exception while holding database lock 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Cannot set MFGmailLabelStore as data source for message."

I can make it crash instantly by doing the following:

1. Search for a word

2. When the messages with the searched word appear, click on any one of them

3. Crash

This is a brand new, just-updated 27" 5K iMac with 16 GB of RAM, and I transferred my data over using Migration Assistant.
