Oct 1, 2015 1:36 AM in response to leroydouglasby philb-london,Thanks, so that clarifies that its a full system update and which machines are supported - my old XServes can keep going that little bit longer! - although not whether its a one-step upgrade path. So, are updates for specific components available? Or is there a way of installing only those from the El Capitan installer?
For those that are interested incidentally, here's a copy of that list of supported machines (NB not all features may be supported):
- iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
- MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later), (12-inch, Early 2015)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
- MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
- Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
- Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
- Xserve (Early 2009)

You install the upgrade and everything is updated.
